Throughthestagesofitsdevelopmentfromanormalschool toateacherscollegetoamultipurposestatecollegeandfinallytoauniversityin1983,theinstitutionhasretained itsemphasisonliberalandcareereducation. ItsserviceareahasbeenexpandedtoincludeallofPennsylvaiua;itsmissionistoprovideprogramsinliberalarts andsciences,business,teachereducation,andhealthsciences.TheCollegeofGraduateStudiesofferstheMasterof Artsdegreeinthreemajorareas,theMasterofScienceineight,andtheMasterofEducationinfive. TheMasterof BusinessAdministrationandtheMasterofScienceinNursingdegreesarealsooffered,andthereare11supervisory certificationprogramsforteachers. Inaddition,Bloomsburgofferscourseworkforadoctoraldegreeinelementary educationincooperationwithIndianaUniversityofPennsylvania. BloomsburgUniversity'sCollegeofExtended Programsservesalargestudentpopulationthroughnondegreecreditcoourses,noncreditminicourses,off-campus classes,creditforlifeexperience,andcoursestaughtbypublicservicetelevision. TheUniversityisfullyaccreditedbytheMiddleStatesAssociationofCollegesandSchoolsandisapprovedbythe Pennsylvania StateBoard ofEducation. Its programs in education areapproved bythe NationalCouncil for AccreditationofTeacherEducation. ThenursingprogramisaccreditedbytheNationalLeagueforNursing. The socialworkprogramisaccreditedbytheCouncilforSocialWorkEducation. TheUniversityreceivesrecognition from the American Chemical Society for its chemistry programs, and several otherdepartments have special recognitionfromprofessionalorganizations. The192-acrecampusisdividedintoalowerandanuppercampus. Theundergraduateenrollmentisapproxi- mately7,000;5,944(2,268menand3,676women)arefull-timestudents. TheUniversitycdsooffersanAssociateinSciencedegreeinhealthsciences. Preprofessionaladvisementand prerequisitecourseworkareavailableforstudentsinterestedinenteringprofessionalschoolsofdentistry,law, medicine,occupationaltherapy,optometry,pharmacy,physicaltherapyandveterinarymedicine. Five-year(3-2)programscombiningliberalartsandengineeringstudyareofferedinconjunctionwithPennsyl- vaniaStateUniversityandWilkesCollege.Studentsreceiveappropriatebaccalaureatedegreesfromeachuniversity. Afive-yearBachelorofArts/MasterofBusinessAdministrationprogramisavailableforchemistry,Frenchand Spanishmajorswhowishtoenhancetheircareerpreparationwithtraininginbusiness. TheUniversityalsohasan affiliation agreement with Thomas Jefferson University for allied health programs in cytotechnology, dental hygiene, occupational therapy, and radiologic technology. A Scholars Program for talented freshmen and sophomoresand ajunior/seniorhonorsprogramforsuperiorstudentsintheCollegeofArtsandSciencesare available. TheUniversityhas369full-timeand29part-timefacultymembers. Allarededicatedtoacademicexcellence througheffectiveteaching,andmanyholdthehighestprofessionaldegreeavailableintheirdiscipline. J \= . t '^ c^^^^ ASSO' About Your Alumni Association TheBloomsburgUniversityAlumniAssociationprovidesavitallinkb—etweentheUniversityandallofits36,000 alumni. Thislinkismadestrongerthroughtwoimportantcomponents communicationandyourinvolvement. TheAssociationprovidesachannelthroughwhichcontactsbetweenclassmatesandfriendsmaybereestablished Inaddition,theAssociationprovidesmanywaysforyoutobeinvolvedintheBUfamilybyattendingacultural, socialorathleticevent. VolunteeryourtimeattheFenstemakerAlumniHouseifyouliveintheBloomsburgarea. TheAlumniAssociationprovidesvehiclesforcommunicationandinvolvement,butyourparticipationdetermines theultimatesuccessoftheAssociation'sprogramsandprojects. TheAssociationiscommittedtocultiiralandhumandiversitygoalsoftheUniversityandtomeetingtheneeds ofan increasingly diverse alumni body. To keep pace with thechanging demographics ofthe Association's membership,systematicsurveysofalumniduringtheirreunionyearswillbeconducted. Allalumniwilltherefore besurveyedwithinafive-yearperiod. The Alumni Board of Directors Theboardconsistsof24directorselectedtoservetwo-yearterms. Directorsarenominatedonthebasisofseveral factors: Classyear,gender,geographicallocation,andinterestorparticipationinactivitiesoftheAssociationor University.Incorporatedin1933,theAssociationisgovernedbyaconstitutionandby-laws(acopyisavailableupon request). TheboardconductstheAssociation'sbusinessusinganactivecommitteestructure. The Committees — AwardsandRecognition Thiscommitteeseeks,reviewsandrecommendsnominationsfor"Distinguished ServiceAwards,"'ToungAlumnioftheYear,"and"HonoraryAlumni"designation. Inaddition,thiscommittee originatesandreviewsproposalsfornewawardsandrecognitionprograms. Italsooffersits recommendationsonotherfinancialmatters. Oneofthiscommittee'smostrecentprojectsisthesponsorshipofthe BloomsburgUniversityspeciallicenseplateprogram. — ChaptersandStudentRelations Thiscommitteeassistsinthedevelopmentofpoliciesandprinciplesfor thealumnichapterprogram.Currentplanscallforthedevelopmentofchaprtercoordinatingcommitteesinseveral geographicalareas,includingWyomingValley,Harrisburg,LehighValley,andMontgomeryCounty. Otherswill beaddedinthefuture.Basedontheresultsofinterestsurveys,thecoordinatingcommitteesplaneventsandprojects topromotetheUniversityandtheAlumniAssociation.ThisboardcommitteealsoprovidesliaisonwiththeHusky AmbassadorsandplanstheannualSeniorSend-OffPicnic. Itsponsors "Share-A-Day,"acareerprogramwith matchesstudentswithBUalumniwithwhomtheycanspendtimeonthejob. AlumniinNewJerseyrepresentthe Universityat30to40collegenightprogramseachyear. — Legislative Affairs ThiscommitteeworkswiththeVicePresidentforUniversityAdvancementandthe PennsylvaniaCoimcilofAlumniAssociations(PCAA)toimplementstrategiestogainsupportfortheStateSystem ofHigherEducationfromthePennsylvaniaGeneralAssemblyandtheGovernor. — Loans and Scholarships A variety of loansand scholarships, provided by alumni and friendsofthe University,areavailableto undergraduatesthroughtheAlumni Association. Thecommitteeplansan annual scholarshippresentationprogramandreception. ThiscommitteealsosetspolicyfortheMcNinchStudentLoan Fund,createdbyabequestfromMaryMcNinchandadministeredbythedirectorofalumniaffairs. TheHoward FenstemakerLibraryBookFund isadministeredbyasub-committeewhichusesinterestearnedbythefundto purchasebooksfortheHarveyA.AndrussLibrary. — Property ThiscommitteemakesrecommendationsconcerningoperationandmaintenanceoftheFenstemaker AlumniHouse,locatedonLightstreetRoadatthenortheastcomerofthelowercampus.Thecommitteealsoadvises theAssociationonmattersconcerningthemaintenanceoftheAlumniRoominCarverHall. Italsorecommends actionsonacquisitionsanddisposaloffurniture,equipmentandpropertybelongingtotheAssociation. Alumni havetraditionallysupportedcampusbeautificationprojects,includingtheSesquicentennialTreeProjectin1989. ThiscommitteewasinstrumentalinthepurchaseoftheFenstemakerAlumniHousein1985. Asub-committee guided thecreation ofthe Veterans' Memorial Garden on the front lawn ofthe Fenstemaker Alumni House (dedicatedonHomecoming1989)andaVeterans'MemorialScholarshipintheamountof$1,000. — SpecialEvents ThiscommitteeassistsinplanningAlumniWeekendand Homecomingactivities. CHher events,suchastheStratfordFestivalandShawFestivaltheatretripsarealsoplannedbythiscommittee. Programs liketheAlumniLuncheonLectureSeriesprovideeducationalsettingsinwhichtomeetsomeoftheUniversity's outstandingfacultymembers. — Long-RangePlanning Thiscommitteeischargedwithmonitoringandupdatingthelong-rangeplanofthe Association. TheplanidentifiesprioritiesoftheAssociationandprovidesforallocationofhumanandfinancial resourcestoimplementprogramsandprojectstobenefittheUniversityandtheAssociation.
