With such a wealth of digital imagery available the aim of Digital Art Masters: Volume 2 is to provide an annual record of some of the greatest digital art works achieved to date and to give these artists an opportunity to inspire others with an insight into their creations. Following the success of our first book, we announced a call out for entries for this second volume and the response was overwhelming; even after filtering out the most appropriate submissions the panel of judges were still faced with the daunting task of reducing 500 excellent images down to a final selection of just sixty. This response is yet another sign of the incredible growth of the digital art industry as it is fueled by the many Internet communities, such as 3DTotal.com, which allow artists to meet, share and learn from each other. For this volume we have joined forces with publishers Focal Press, an imprint of Elsevier. We are confident that, with their experience and worldwide networks combined with the leading talent of the digital art community, this book series will strengthen further and will be accessible to a much wider audience. Final thanks must of course go the 58 digital art masters featured on the forthcoming pages, who represent five continents and thirty countries. The combination of their cutting edge skills, talents and mastery of both traditional art techniques and software knowledge provide us with this volume that is sure to educate and inspire artists everywhere. As a digital artist, it gives me great pleasure to be given the chance of participating in this celebration of artistic achievement. Together, we share a common passion, and the digital revolution has allowed us to explore our creativity in ways that were once impossible. In recent years, digital art has taken huge strides. The continued hard work and accomplishments of those at every level within the community have launched it into mainstream consciousness as a valid medium for artists of all backgrounds, finally earning the recognition and respect it deserves. Like any art form, talent must be coupled with a degree of technical skill and ability before true self-expression can flourish. Therein lies the beauty of the Digital Art Masters series. The flair and imagination on display in this book is paired with an insight into the creative process behind it. The variety of subject matter and diversity of styles result in an eclectic mix that is testament to the evolution of the medium. The art exhibits more than just personal talent, it represents the greater community and shows the world that digital art has matured in a way that allows artists to achieve their visions without limitation. All of the artists featured in this book have poured their heart and soul into the work that so elegantly graces its pages. I applaud the efforts of 3DTotal and Focal © John Kearney Press for supporting them, and providing an outlet through which they are able to share their hard-earned knowledge and talents for the education and enjoyment of artists everywhere. I believe that we are entering a renaissance period for digital art, and I feel that this volume can influence a new generation by encouraging creative exploration. For those that have already embarked on a journey towards artistic enlightenment, may your voyage through this book provide a continued source of inspiration and fulfilment. by John Kearney www.Brushsize.com [email protected] © John Kearney ix DAM V2.indb 9 01/05/2007 11:26:35
