E.K Africa Datum Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za OPSOMMING Die toenemende integrasie van ons globale gemeenskap transformeer menslike sosiale interaksie en herdefinieer die konteks van adolessente se lewens. Adolessente word gebombardeer met verskeie keuses in ʼn stadium van hulle lewe waar hulle worstel om hulle eie identiteit te ontwikkel. Hierdie kritieke stadium word deur ʼn verhoogde begeerte om met die volwasse lewe te eksperimenteer, gekenmerk. Eksperimentering is dus nie ongewoon nie. Hierdie gedragspatrone kan aanhou tot in die volwasse jare, met kort- en langtermyn gevolge vir die individu se gesondheid en die gemeenskap as ʼn geheel. Die studie ondersoek die voorkoms van ʼn reeks gesondheidsrisikofaktore onder adolessente Kleurlingdogters in die Worcester-omgewing. Dit fokus op die identifisering van gedragspatrone soos geweld en misdaad, rook, alkohol en dwelmgebruik en -misbruik, seksuele aktiwiteit, ongesonde eetgewoontes en fisieke onaktiwiteit wat adolessente aan hoë gesondheidsrisikofaktore blootstel. ʼn Intervensieprogram is by die betrokke skole van stapel gestuur in ʼn poging om hierdie gedragspatrone aan te spreek en om leerders aangaande die gevare van die gesondheidsrisikofaktore in te lig. Die steekproef is uit drie voorheenbenadeelde hoërskole in die Worcester omgewing geselekteer. As gevolg van beperkende omstandighede by die betrokke skole kon die steekproef nie ewekansig geselekteer word nie. Die studie is dus op ʼn kwasi- eksperimentele navorsingsmetode gebaseer. Proefpersone (N=1805) in Graad 8 tot 10 het ʼn vraelys (pretoets) voltooi wat op die Youth Risk Behaviour Survey (YRBS) gebaseer is. ʼn Kontrole- en eksperimentele groep is uit die betrokke Grade by al die verskillende skole geselekteer. Na afloop van die pretoets is die eksperimentele groep aan ʼn sesmaandelange intervensieprogram blootgestel. Na afloop van die intervensieprogram is ʼn posttoets op die eksperimentele en kontrolegroepe onderneem. Vier maande na die posttoets is dieselfde toets wat nou as die opvolgtoets bekend staan, op al die proefpersone onderneem. Die dogters wat deur die loop van die studie uitgeval het, staan as die uitvalgroep bekend. Die sosio-ekonomiese agtergrond van die dogters, asook toestemming dat hulle aan die studie kan deelneem, is deur middel van ʼn vraelys aan die ouers, ingewin. Inligting aangaande die stand en status van Liggaamlike Opvoeding (LO) en Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za bewegingsprogramme binne Lewensoriëntering by die skole is deur middel van ʼn selfontwerpte vraelys wat deur die betrokke Graad 8-, 9- en 10-onderwysers ingevul is, bekom. Om tred te hou met liggaamsgrootte en groei, is massa en lengte bepaal en liggaamsmassa-indeks (LMI) bereken. Bloeddruk is gemeet om te bepaal tot watter mate hierdie dogters aan hipertensie, al dan nie, ly, en velvou-metings is geneem om vetpersentasie te bepaal. Die 20m-wisselloop (shuttle run) [Bleep-toets] is gebruik om die fisieke aktiwiteitsvlakke van die proefpersone indirek te bepaal. Meer respondente het in die posttoets (64%) beweer dat leerders wapens in die laaste 30 dae voor die opname by die skool gedra het as in die pretoets (52%). Die resultate toon dat 64% van die respondente in die posttoets beweer het dat leerders wapens by die skool dra teenoor 29% van die respondente in die opvolgtoets (p<0.01). Volgens die resultate het 11% van die respondente tydens die pretoets aangedui dat hulle rook teenoor 14% tydens die posttoets (p<0.01). Nege persent (9%) van die proefpersone het in die afgelope week voor die opname tydens die pretoets rapporteer dat hulle minstens een alkoholiese drankie gedrink het teenoor 22% tydens die posttoets (p<0.01). Ongeveer 2% van die respondente het tydens die pretoets aangedui dat hulle al dagga gerook het teenoor 9% tydens die posttoets (p<0.01). Meer seksueel aktiewe respondente in die opvolgtoets (57%) het kondome gebruik die laaste keer toe hulle seksuele omgang gehad het in vergelyking met die posttoets (46%). Nege-en-veertig persent (49%) van die respondente het tydens die pretoets rapporteer dat hulle iets gedoen het om gewig te verloor of om te verhoed dat hulle gewig optel teenoor 25% tydens die post- en 31% tydens die opvolgtoets. Volgens die resultate het 35% van die respondente tydens die pretoets LO by hul skool rapporteer teenoor die 30% tydens die posttoets en 54% tydens die opvolgtoets. In die meeste gevalle bestaan daar ʼn tendens wat ʼn toename toon in die veranderlikes wat gemeet is tussen die pre- en die posttoets. Die resultate het in die meeste gevalle konstant gebly tussen die post- en die opvolgtoets. Die studie kan ʼn wegwyser wees vir verdere navorsing in ʼn poging om gesondheidsrisikofaktore onder adolessente dogters met behulp van opvoedkundige programme in samewerking met verskeie rolspelers in die gemeenskap te bekamp. Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za SUMMARY The continued integration of our global society has caused a shift in human social interaction and redefined the contexts of adolescents’ lives. Adolescents are inundated with a variety of choices at a stage of their lives where they are trying to create their own identity. This critical period of development is highlighted by an increased desire to experiment with adult life. Thus is experimentation not uncommon. The study examines the prevalence of a range of health risk behaviours amongst adolescent girls. It focuses on the identification of behaviours such as violence, smoking, alcohol and drug use and abuse, sexual behaviours, dietary behaviours and physical inactivity that place adolescents at increased risk for premature morbidity and mortality. An intervention programme was launched at the schools concerned in an effort to address these behaviour patterns and to inform learners regarding the dangers of these health risk factors. The sample population was selected from three previously disadvantaged high schools in the Worcester region. Due to restrictive circumstances at the schools, the sample could not be randomly selected and therefore the study is based on a quasi- experimental research approach. A sample of 1805 adolescent girls in Grades 8 to 10 completed a questionnaire, which assessed a range of health risk behaviours. This questionnaire was based on the Youth Risk Behaviour Survey (YRBS) and completed by all the respondents during the pre-test. A control and experimental group was selected from the Grades concerned, at the different schools. The experimental group was subjected to a six-months long intervention programme. At the end of the intervention programme a post-test was conducted on both the control and experimental groups. Four months after the post-test the respondents were subjected to the same test, which is now known as the follow-up test. The girls who dropped out of the study as it progressed are referred to as the drop-out group. Information regarding the socio-economic background of the girls, as well as permission to take part in the study, was obtained from the parents by means of a questionnaire. A self-designed questionnaire was used to obtain information regarding the state and status of Physical Education (PE) and movement Stellenbosch University http://scholar.sun.ac.za programmes within Life Orientation at the schools. Teachers who were responsible for Grades 8, 9 and 10, completed the questionnaire. To keep track of body size and growth, mass and length were determined and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Blood pressure was measured to determine to what extend these girls suffer from hypertension. Skinfold measures were taken to determine the fat percentage. The 20m shuttle run (Bleep test) was used to indirectly determine the physical activity levels of the respondents. The main results are discussed next. The results indicate that more respondents in the post-test (64%) reported that learners carry weapons on school grounds than in the pre-test. According to the results 64% of the respondents indicated in the post-test that learners carry weapons on school grounds compared to 29% of the respondents in the follow-up test (p<0.01). The pre-tests results indicate that 11% of the respondents smoke cigarettes in comparison to 14% in the post-test (p<0.01). Approximately 9% of the respondents in the pre-test indicated that they drank at least one alcoholic drink in the week before the study was undertaken in comparison to the 22% of the post-test (p<0.01). Regarding the smoking of dagga 2% of the respondents indicated in the pre-test that they smoked dagga whereas 9% in the post-test indicated that they did. More sexual active respondents during the follow-up test (57%) indicated that they used condoms during their last sexual experience than in the post-test (46%). The results of the pre-test indicate that approximately 49% of the respondents did something to loose weight or to prevent weight-gain in comparison to the 25% of the post-test and the 31% of the follow-up test. According the results, 35% of the respondents purported to have PE at their school in comparison to 30% during the post-test and 54% during the follow-up test. Although there were some exceptions, in most cases a tendency existed that indicated an increase in the variables measured between the pre-test and post-test. In most cases the results remained constant between the post-test and the follow-up test. This study can therefore be a starting point for further research into the process to combat health risk behaviours amongst adolescent girls. This can be done with educational programmes in cooperation with several role-players in the community.
