The first annual derby was formally postponed from Jan. 16 and 17to Feb. 6and 7. An alternate date of March 12 and 13 has also been set aside in case suitable snow for a racetrack is slow to arrive, said Wannamaker on Jan 7. The dogsled track at the Didsbury Agricultural Grounds does not yet have a solid base, she said. “The snow we have is fluffy, won't stay in the wind and the stubble is still pokingup throughthe snow,” she said. “It’s frustrating.” Skyoring-a race in which one or two dogs pulla skier instead of a sled - is riskybecause without a good base on the track, skiers catch their edges and can have nastytumbles, said Wannamaker. Wannamaker said that avid dogsledders are out on the track althoughit is not competition-readyand the agriculture grounds will be a superb venue for the event that is expectedto attract dogsledders and fans from across Alberta. The dogsled derby will have three categories of dogsled races -a four-dog team on a four-mile course, six dogs on a six-mile course and eightdogs on asix-mile course. There will be two skyoringevents: one or two dogs towingskiers over a two-mile distance and two dogs Noel West/MVP Staff over four miles.
