Martin H. Fischer Clinical diagnosis requires the evaluating doctor to have a clear understanding of both normal anatomy and physiology as well as an understanding of the range of possible patholo- gies. This allows unambiguous and precise history taking, well directed examination and a clear plan of appropriate investi- gations to be made. Urology can be thought of as both a medical and surgical speciality where patients present to a range of different doc- tors with a wide variety of symptoms. There are a number of nuances to be brought out in a focussed urological history and many important clinical signs to assess. These present the clinician with a significant diagnostic challenge due to the range of possible differential diagnoses and the investigative tests available. Technological advances in recent years have changed the diagnostic algorithms for a number of common conditions. Within easily digestible chapters, this book aims to suc- cinctly outline the key aspects of the history and examination for each common presenting symptom. It then describes the usual range of investigations and any evolving tests or imag- ing modalities for each area. It is hoped this book will be useful to both primary care physicians and those working in vii viii Introduction and Aims the emergency department. Medical students and those embarking on a surgical or urological career should also find it of significant benefit. London, UK Ben Challacombe Frimley, UK Simon R. J.
