ThisSpringerimprintispublishedbytheregisteredcompanySpringerNatureSwitzerlandAG Theregisteredcompanyaddressis:Gewerbestrasse11,6330Cham,Switzerland Preface This is the second Diabetic Foot Ulcer (DFU) proceedings, this one focusing on the DFU Challenge 2022 (DFUC 2022), organized in conjunction with the 25th Interna- tional Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI2022).Followingtwochallenges(DFUC2020andDFUC2021)conducted as virtual events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this challenge event was conducted inpersononSeptember22,2022inSingapore.Wereceivedover1000submissionsfor thevalidationstageand52submissionsforthetestingstage. TheDFUchallengesaimtomotivatethehealthcaredomaintosharedatasets,par- ticipate in ground truth annotation, and enable data-innovation in computer algorithm development.Inthelongerterm,itwillleadtoimprovedpatientcareandreducethestrain onoverburdenedhealthcaresystems.Withjointeffortsfromleadingscientistsfromthe UK,US,IndiaandNewZealand,theseinauguralchallengeswerewell-received,with thefirstDFUchallengesuccessfullyconductedin2020forthetaskofDFUdetection andthesecondDFUchallengesuccessfullyconductedin2021forthetaskofDFUclas- sification.ThetaskofDFUC2022wasulcersegmentation,forthepurposeofsupporting researchtowardsmoreadvancedmethodsofulcerregionquantification. Thisproceedingsincludesresearchpapersinvestigatingtheeffectofduplicateimages inDFUC2021(asacontinuationfromtheDFUC2021proceedings),gathersmethod- ologicalpapersofsegmentationmethodsevaluatedatDFUC2022andpostchallenge, and includes a DFUC 2022 summary paper from the organizers. Apart from the con- tinuationpaperofDFUC2021andasummarypaper,allpaperswerereviewedby2–3 reviewersandassignedtoameta-reviewer.ForDFUC2022papersasingle-blindreview processwasused,acceptingonlythetop-5entriesduetotheproceedingscallforpapers deadline. In total we received 21 paper submissions with only eight papers accepted andtwowithdrawnwithanacceptancerateof45%.Theorganizerswerenotlistedas authorsforthechallengeandpostchallengepapers. Asaconcludingnote,theorganizersofthechallengecontinuetosupporttheresearch communitybyprovidingliveleaderboardstotesttheperformanceoftheiralgorithms. To date, there are 204 submissions on the DFUC 2022 live leaderboard. Researchers whoareinterestedinthechallengecanrequestthedatasetsandevaluateonourgrand challengewebsites(DFUdetectiontask,DFUclassificationtaskandDFUsegmentation task).TheorganizerswillconductDFUC2023inconjunctionwithMICCAI2023,with thetaskfocusingonDFUinstancesegmentation.
