Thepresentvolumeisthefourthintheseries‘TrendsinLanguageAcquisition
Research’ (TiLAR). As an official publication of the International Association
for theStudy of ChildLanguage (IASCL), theTiLAR Seriespublishestwovol-
umes per three year period in between IASCL congresses.All volumesin the
IASCL-TiLAR Series are invited edited volumes by IASCL members that are
stronglythematicinnatureandthatpresentcuttingedgeworkwhichislikely
tostimulatefurtherresearchtothefullestextent.
Besidesquality,diversityisalsoanimportantconsiderationinallthevol-
umesandintheseriesasawhole:diversityoftheoreticalandmethodological
approaches, diversity in the languages studied, diversity in the geographical
andacademicbackgroundsofthecontributors.Afterall,liketheIASCLitself,
the IASCL-TiLAR Series is there for child language researchers from all over
theworld.
Afterthepreviousvolumes,onbilingualacquisition,signlanguageacquisi-
tion,andlanguagedevelopmentbeyondtheearlychildhoodyears,respectively,
wenowareverypleasedtopresentthecurrentvolumeonchildlanguagedis-
ordersandhowtheseinformdevelopmentaltheoryorareinformedbyit.We
areverygratefultothevolumeeditors,PaulFletcherandJonMiller,fortheir
willingnesstocontributetheirlong-standingexpertiseinthisarea.Theyhave
brought togetheran impressive collection of state-of-the-artwork by leading
scholarsfromavarietyofbackgrounds.Wehopethisvolumecanindeedhelp
tobridgethegapthatoftenexistsbetweenresearchersinthemoreappliedcom-
munication disorders field and those working in more theoretically oriented
disciplines.
