The entire makeup of the University took the plunge into an immense effort to strengthen all aspects of the school. With the support of the students, alumni, community and the governor, President V. Lane Rawlins made the first steps in changing the community college image of the school into that of a major urban research institution. The biggest leap into that future came with the final plans to change the name of the University for the fifth time since it opened its doors in 1912. As of July 1, 1994, Mem- phis State University became The University of Memphis. Whether practicing for a gig in a smoke-filled club, con- serving candles and matches for days without electricity or plunging into the mud in anticipation of smashing the volleyball over the net, students gave themselves a boost to complete that part of their college years. Y>A#h*4+C n order for the President Rawlins and the rest of the administration to plunge into an image overhaul, a strategy had to be formed. Changing the name of the University, building a new library and planning a performing and cultural arts center for the entire community each had its own place in the blueprints for The University of Memphis.
