ISBN 978-81-204-1721-2 2-J9-11 PREFACE TO THE FIFTH EDITION The present trend towards higher productivity in almost all fields of engineering manufacture has resulted in the evolution of newer and better techniques of manufacture and brought about a thorough change in the design of machine tools. Such an evaluation is characterised by the increased quality and reduced cost of production machines, as well as by the more and more use of automatic, programme — controlled or transfer machines, in the field of specialized production of complicated components. As a result the traditional method of design based on massive construction is gradually giving way to limit design. Very few books are available to-day which can give a comprehensive method of designing machine tool elements. Author's long experience, as a teacher in Production Engineering, tells him about the need of one comprehensive textbook which can meet the requirement of a student stepping into the field of machine tool design. The book is, therefore, designed primarily to meet the requirements of a Mechanical and Production Engineering students of our universities at the undergraduate, as well as post-graduate levels. Most of the principles discussed in this book have been explained with neat and simple sketches, which in some cases are self-explanatory. An effort has been made to give an idea to the students about probable questions that may be expected in the examinations and possible answer to many of the numerical questions. It is hoped that the book will prove to be an essential guide book of information to reach workers and designers working in the machine tool factories, laboratories and research Institutions as well. The principal author wishes to express his gratitude to Dr. B.B. Ahuja, Professor and Head, Department of Production Engineering, Pune and other colleagues in the department, who have always rendered kind help and advice, in compiling the new edition. S.K. Basu College of Engineering, Pune An autonomous Institute of Govt. of Maharashtra February 2008 t PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION THE present trend towards higher productivity in almost alt fields of engineering manufacture has resulted in the evolution of newer and better techniques of manufacture and brought about a thorough change in the design of machine tools. Such an evolution is charac- terised by the increased quality and reduced cost of production machines, as well as by the more and more use of automatic, pro- gramme-controlled or transfer machines, in the field of specialised production of complicated components. As a result the traditional method of design based on massive construction is gradually giving way to limit design. Very few books are available to-day which can give a comprehen- sive method of designing machine tool elements. Author's long experience, as a teacher in Production Technology, tells him about the need of one comprehensive textbook whick can meet the require- ment of a student Stepping into the field of machine tool design. The book is, therefore, designed primarily to meet the requirements of the Mechanical Engineering students of our Universities at the undergraduate as well as post-graduate levels. While writing the preface the author ceufesses limiting the subject matter within a narrow volume to prevent the price of the book rising up tremen- dously. Most of the principles discussed in this book have been explained with neat and simple sketches, which in some cases are self-expla- natory. Wherever possible, the problems have been solved. Results of some of the research work carried out during the last fifteen years have been incorporated, with the idea that these will interest the students• desirous of carrying out further studies in this vital branch of mechanical engineering. It is hoped that the book will prove to be an essential guide book of information to research workers and designers working in the machine tool factories, labo- ratories and research Institutions as well. viii PREFACE In conclusion the author wishes to express his gratitude to Prof. S.C. Das, Mr. K.C. Sahu and Prof. R. Mishra of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, Prof. V.E. Push of the Machine Tool and Toolinstitute. Moscow, for their kind help and valuable advice from time to time without which it would not have been possible to publish this book. The author also acknowledges with thanks the permilsion given by the Institution of Engineers (India) to reproduce a few extracts from its journals.
