There has been an increase in the numbers of vessels in use in the chemical and petrochemical industries, in fossil and nuclear power stations and in aerospace and marine engineering applications. Many of these applications call for operation under extremes of high or low temperature, high internal or external pressure and severe environments. These developments have caused much attention to be given to the safety and reliability of pressure vessels. Consequently there has been remarkable progress in many aspects related to their design, materials, fabrication and methods of inspection. Interest in pressure vessel technology is truly international. All the countries of the world are facing the same problems in this respect. The International Conference on Pressure Vessel Technology (ICPVT) held approximately once every four years, organised by the International Council for Pressure Vessel Technology, gives research workers and design and operational engineers the opportunity to get together to exchange views and to present their contributions to pressure vessel technology. Previous conferences and their locations have been as follows: 1969 ICPVT 1 Delft, The Netherlands 1973 ICPVT 2 San Antonia, Texas, USA 1977 ICPVT 3 Tokyo, Japan 1980 ICPVT 4 London, UK 1984 ICPVT 5 San Francisco, California, USA The present volumes relate to the proceedings of the Sixth ICPVT Conference held in Beijing in the People's Republic of China in 1988. At this conference special emphasis was given to practical applications in pressure vessel technology, particularly with respect to the results of recent development and research, including contributions from prominent specialists from many different countries. In order to present the broadest technical scope some 140 papers were carefully selected from the considerable number of submissions, with about the same number coming from each of the three regions of ICPVT, namely the Asia-Oceanic Region, the European-African Region and the North-South American Region. It is our great pleasure to present these papers in these volumes for your permanent library. As has been the case previously, these Proceedings are divided into three separate volumes as follows: Volume 1 Design and Analysis Volume 2 Materials and Fabrication Volume 3 The Robert Wylie Memorial Lecture, the ICPVT 6 Invited Lectures and supplementary material vlii The Sixth International Conference on Pressure Vessel Technology was organised by the Chinese Steering Committee arranged by the Chinese Pressure Vessel Institution of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society with the cooperation of the Asia-Oceanic Regional Committee and the High Pressure Institute of Japan. A great deal of assistance was provided by the European-African Regional Committee, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in England, the American Regional Committee and the Pressure Vessel and Piping Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. We are indebted to these committees, societies, groups and staff members for making the conference possible, and also to the lecturers, authors, panelists and other participants for their contributions to the fields of pressure vessel technology. Shu-Ho Dai Technical Programme Chairman
