My thanks go to the many people who have assisted in the production of this volume, but I would particularly like to note the contributions of two persons: MRS. LOUISE CURTIS (POORE) MUZRALL Without her generous, unstinting help, this study would never have been written. NOREEN C. PRAMBERG Her help preparing the book for publication was greatly appreciated. Later generations frequently dropped the "e," and spelled the name "Poor," only to have subsequent descendants return the "e," as happened in my family. As all three ways of spelling the name are pronounced the same, we cannot be sure how a particular person choose to spell his or her name by consulting court records or vital statistics. Consequently, I have used the spelling, "Poore," throughout the manuscript. VII Vlll
