Samuel John Mills, ancestor of this author, who served as minister at Torringford his whole career. It refers at the end to his son, #189 Rev. Samuel John Mills, who died off the coast of Africa during his work to establish foreign missions. The author thus traces a thread of sensitivity to spiritual matters from Pieter Wouterse vander Meulen who contended with the Windsor church, through his son Peter and wife Joanna who sent three sons to Yale to be trained for the ministry and through their son John of Kent, his son Samuel John, his great-grandson, #1197 Rev. Dana Mills Walcott, who also served at Torringford, to his daughter, #1633 Helen Walcott, who was a powerful influence in the author's childhood. The map on the end papers is courtesy of the Bloomfield, Connecticut, Historical Society.
