John Q. Adams made a trustee deed on the 30th of July 1856, in Henry
Co., Virginia, to Samuel Smith for his property including, crops, livestock
and one Negro boy named Henry, total value being $800. I could not find
a resolution to this deed in the ended cases. I am assuming this $800
financed the family's move across the mountains.

[NOTE: The 1850 census, enumerated in August 1850, lists the youngest
child, a son, of Robert and Leanza Coon Alford, as 'John W. Alford - age
3/12 years. This date coincides with the May 1850 date of birth of
Lafayette Alford. Subsequent census data along with the Hardesty
Encyclopedia information, not to mention family information, confirms the
correct name as 'Lafayette Alford.' One can only guess that it was an
enumerator error.]

Lafayette Alford - was born May 7, 1850, in what was then Cabell County,
Virginia. He was a son of Robert and Leanzey (Coon) Alford, who were
living in what is now Lincoln County when it was organized, and a
grandson of George Alford, who was prominent among the earliest
settlers here, living a few miles below the present site of Griffithsville, and
raising a large family there. The subject of this sketch owns 85 acres on
Trace Fork of Mud River, and has 50 acres under cultivation. He has eight
acres of choice fruit, and all the land abounds in that mineral wealth
which in the near future will be developed in this county. His father, who is
now sixty-eight years of age, was shot through the thigh while in
Tennessee, serving in the Confederate Army, Witcher's Battalion. he was
badly crippled by his injury, one leg remaining seven inches shorter than
the other.

In Lincoln County, March 4, 1873, Lafayette Alford wedded Sarah
Catharine V. Adams. She was born in Franklin County, Virginia, March 2,
1850, a daughter of John Quincy and Sarah (Goode) Adams, of Franklin
County. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Alford are three living, two
deceased: Rose Delphine, born January 28, 1873, died November 7, 1878,
James Wilbert, born July 24, 1875, died October 26, 1878, William Thomas,
born November 30, 1876, John Robert, born July 1, 1880; Stafford G.,
September 1, 1883. Lafayette Alford's post office address is Griffithsville,
Lincoln County, West Virginia.

Dad, My grandfather got a briar scratch on his leg -- it turned into blood
poisoning and he died due to the poor treatment of a country doctor.

He died at Charleston General hospital in Charleston WV. His attending
physician at Charleston was a Dr. Glass.
