'Wayne' Pauley 09 Jun 1854 in Kanawha County, Virginia (WV), son of Mohaney Pauley and Lucinda Turley. He was born Apr 1829 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and died 14 Jun 1922 in St. Albans. Kanawha County, WV. Notes for William A. 'Wayne' Pauley: PAULEY, WILLIAM A. 'WAYNE' Charleston WV Gazette, Sunday, June 25, 1922. Death at 93 Takes Giant Who Nursed Great-Great Grandchild In Last Days. William A. Pauley; Civil War Veteran, Dies Near St Albans, Leaving 107 Descendants - 37 Grand- Children, 61 Great-Grandchildren. Will there ever be another folk like that sturdy race that is now making its last and hopeless stand against the ravages of time-the men and women who were at their prime, as the civil war ended, who fought hard and lived simply, and who handed down to posterity a lineage great and powerful? And will there ever be another like William A. Pauley, that giant of 93 summers and winters, who died a week ago Wednesday near, St. Albans, fighting just as hard in death as he lived in life? This giant, who fought in the civil war as a Union soldier during the last too years of that conflict, was buried a week ago in a plot on the land which he trod in his boyhood. And the host that attended that burial swarmed across the farm where he had lived for many years. For he has left descendants to the number of 107, and' all who could paid him homage. He was the "daddy of them all," and they were divided four classes-7 children, 37 grandchildren, 61 great-grand-children and 2 great-great-grandchildren. One of the great-great-grand children is dead, but the oldest, the two year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emery Harless, residents of Summitt, near Griffithsville, is very much alive. Her name is Lorraine, and as a baby she was nursed on the knee of her great-great-grandfather, a feat perhaps never duplicated in these days of fast and furious living and comparatively early death. Some of them are dead, but the great majority of Pauley's children are living. Four of his seven children are living. Two girls and one boy died several years ago. Those who survive him are A. M. Pauley and W. S. Pauley, of Charleston, Mrs. Elizabeth L. Smith of Priestly, Lincoln county, and Mrs. Lucy F. Wood of near St. Albans, at whose home Mr. Pauley died. The aged man had been married three times, but his first wife was the mother of all his children. She was Emily M. Holstein, a Lincoln countian, whose married him in 1863 and died in 1888. Records of his discharge from the Union army after the civil war show that at that time he stood six feet and an inch, and that he weighed 210 pounds. In later years he lost some of that weight, but he was still a powerful man at the time-of his death. Sixty-two years ago Pauley purchased a farm in Lincoln County. Until a year and a half ago he lived despite his advanced age. He traveled about the countryside astride his horse, able to ride as hard and as long as many a younger man. But, in his ninety-first year, he began to feel the, ravages of time, and his health his vigor, his strength, failed him fast. Within a few months he was really an old man, old in all things, but the vitality of former years had not quite deserted him entirely. He was finally forced into his bed, and physicians sent for members of his family, believing the end was near. They came, and in ten days he was again upon his feet. His battle was lost irretrievably, however, and he went to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wood, there to spend his last days. He spent a year and a half there before his deaths walking about "the place," waiting placidly upon the long-deferred death: visited frequently by the many "children of mine" who were his descendants, both young and old and who worshipped him. Then he died, more than a week ago, and he let loose of life only after a struggle, for he had lived hard and the unspent forces within him rebelled at extermination, despite the fact that he viewed death without fear or regret.
