1792 - Signed a petition to have road built from Catawba River to Montford Cove, Burke County, NC.
Abner, his brother Joseph, and their families arrived on Flynn's Creek in Jackson County, TN in November
1799. Freezing weather was upon them before they were able to construct a shelter. They had 60 head of
cattle which they planned to feed through the winter in the cane break. Abner settled near where Antioch
Church of Christ now stands. Abner built his house about 150 feet from the huge spring on land now
owned by Doxie Birdwell. The area soon became the Chaffin Settlement. The Smith County Court in 1801
ordered a road built from Fort Blount on the Cumberland River to the Chaffin Settlement.
Abner and Joseph established a gunpowder business before 1812. They mined saltpeter and lead from the
old Peter's Cave on Blackburns Fork. These products were ground by a water mill powered by the big
spring on Abner's property. Parts of the old mill are still visible in the water below the spring. The
gunpowder was sold in Lawrenceburg, TN to a Federal depot which supplied Andrew Jackson in the War
of 1812.
In 1806, a petition was circulated and signed by over 200 residents of Jackson County, TN, including
Abner Chaffin, asking the General Assembly to pass an Act reducing the size of the county to its
Constitutional limit of 625 square miles. It also suggested that a permanent site for the County Seat be
chosen.

Benjamin Franklin Chaffin was appointed a deacon with Abner Chaffin when the Church of Christ was
first organized at "Talley's Old Field" on July 17, 1858. William Davidson and Thomas J. Loftis were the

Jackson, Sarah (Birdwell) JCS, Wednesday, February 8, 1928: age 84, one of the most beloved and widely
known citizens of Jackson County, died at her daughter's Mrs. Sidney Fox's home Monday at 7 o'clock
A.M. January 23. Funeral was conducted by Rev. John William Fox at the Byers Cemetery Wednesday at
10 o'clock January 25.
She is survived by her children and one brother, T.E. Birdwell and one sister, Mrs. T.E. Anderson. She was
the mother of twelve children, ten of whom survive her: Mrs. W.C. Aytes, who lives in Texas; Mrs. J.F.
Jackson, deceased; Mrs. Sidney C. Fox, Route 3, Gainesboro, Tennessee; Mr. T.B. Jackson of Putnam
County; Mrs. J.L. Petty of Putnam County; Mrs. Lucy Harley, deceased; Mr. Hazy Jackson of Sumner
County; Mrs. Fate Stout of Jackson County; Mrs. Ida Harley of Oklahoma; Mrs. Henry Chaffin of Sumner
County; Mr. Bratch Jackson of Sumner County; Mr. John Jackson of Putnam County; Mr. Stanley Jackson,
deceased 28 years, 11 months to a day when Mrs. Jackson died.
Mrs. Jackson was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Jackson, deceased. She obeyed the gospel when quite
young and lived a faithful Christian the rest of her life.

Conflict over John or Joseph Stanley appears to be resolved. Jean Winstead also visited the Byers Cemetery
