The Canadian Hartshorn Connection DESCENDANTS OF AARON HARTSHORN & HANNAH PEASLEY FROM VERMONT, USA TO ONTARIO, CANADA & MICHIGAN, USA 2015 Edition CREDITS The research, assistance and support of this document have been a collaborative effort by Arthur L. Kuhn of Ashburn, VA and Virginia Salmon Lambdin of St. Marys, Ontario. The nature of their work has been vital in the compilation of this report. Without their kind assistance, the history provided here would be but a jumble of loose records and many important lines and individuals would have been lost. To them I owe a great debt of gratitude. RESEARCHERS Descendant of Aaron Hartshorn “the younger” • Thomas “Tom” Michael Hartson (1952-2013), Michigan, USA Tom Hartson had a passion for researching his family genealogy. The original research performed by Tom over the years was probably the most comprehensive study ever done on the link between Aaron Hartshorn (1752-1800) of Danville, Vermont and the Hartshorn family of (perhaps) Aaron Hartshorn, "the younger" (1807-1887). Descendant of Huldah Hartshorn Salmon • Virginia Salmon Lambdin, St. Marys, Ontario, Canada Descendant of James Henry Hartshorn • Arthur “Art” L. Kuhn, Ashburn, Virginia, USA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For many years, I have attempted to discover the origin of the very first individual who chose to shorten the HARTSHORN name to HARTSON. It is evident that the HARTSON name was not an original name, but a truncation of the family name of Hartshorn. While no one person can be said to have been the pioneer, the change probably came due to the early pronunciation of the name. "Hart'sn" seemed to be easier to pronounce that "Harts-horn." The transition in spelling appeared to have begun during and after the American Revolution. This change in spelling resulted in the following family members, all of whom originated the lineage of Thomas1 Hartshorn. PREPARER Derick S. Hartshorn 1204 4th Street Drive, SE, Conover, NC 28613-1827 (828) 464-4981; [email protected] THE HARTSHORN LINEAGE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - This Hartshorn family began with the emigrant ancestor, Thomas Hartshorn1 (1614-1683) who arrived in America about 1638. His point of origin is thought to have been in the English Midlands, possibly in the Nottingham/Derby area where ancient ancestor, Aluricus (Aluric), a landowner in the village of Hartshorne in Derbyshire was recorded in the Domeday Book, in AD 1086, during the Great Survey. - The line descends through Thomas’ youngest son Timothy2 (1661/2-1732), from his second wife, Sarah Ayres. - Timothy’s second son, Thomas3 (1691-1765) continues the line through Thomas, Jr.4 (1718/19-1809). - Thomas’ fifth child, Aaron5 (1752-1800), was the last of the line from Reading, Mass. - Aaron5 died relatively young, at age 48, in Danville, Vermont. - The subject of this study is Aaron’s son, Aaron. Jr.6 (1781-1847). He was married to Hannah Peasley. For the purposes of clarification, he is referred to as “Aaron the elder.” This line, beginning with Thomas1, removed from Reading, Massachusetts, to Hillsborough, New Hampshire. From there, the line removed to Caledonia County, Vermont. - Aaron6 was the only child of Aaron5 to move to London, Middlesex County, Ontario. Derick S. Hartshorn Conover, NC Contents 1. Aaron HARTSHORN1 “the elder” was born about 1781 in Danville, Caledonia County, Vermont (or possibly in New York, according to Catherine Hartshorn Foster's death certificate), the son of Aaron Hartshorn I and Zeruiah Blunt. He died on 6 Feb 1847 at the age of 66 in London Twp., London District, Canada West (Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada).4 Aaron HARTSHORN "the elder" and Hannah PEASLEY were married on 12 Jan 1806 in Danville, Caledonia County, Vermont.5–6 This is confirmed by the death certificates of both Catherine Foster and her sister Huldah Salmon. Huldah's death certificate gives further info that Hannah's birthplace was England, but this is in doubt, based on the birth place of her father, Jedediah. Hannah PEASLEY, daughter of Jedediah PEASLEY and Judith HUNT, was born about 1787 in Danville, Caledonia County, Vermont. She died about 1843 at the age of 56 in London Twp., London District, Canada West (Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada). They are both buried somewhere in the vicinity. In 1801, Aaron Hartshorn took the Freeman's Oath when he was 21 and is listed in the Danville, Vermont town records through 1803. His name no longer appears in the Danville town records after 1803 with the exception of the "Publishments" of his and Hannah Peasley's intentions to marry, dated January 12, 1806. He was in Stanstead, Quebec in 1807. 2 The "Vermont North Star" ran an ad for several months in 1807, advertising land for sale in Danville, VT. The property was being sold by Aaron Hartshorn (currently of Stanstead, Quebec). This appears to be the property he inherited from his father's estate - 8½ acres near the Danville Court House and several house lots near the court house as well. Daniel Smith and Samuel Morrell were authorized to bargain on behalf of Aaron Hartshorn. Daniel Smith was Aaron's brother-in-law. He married his sister Susanna. It appears Aaron and Hannah Peasley Hartshorn were in Stanstead as early as 1807. Hannah's father, Jedediah Peasley was also in Stanstead at this time. Stanstead is just over the Vermont line, north of Derby, VT. We also now know that he carried on the family tradition of true patriots loyal to the U.S., departing the Canadian side sometime prior to the War of 1812, joining Capt. Rufus Stewart's Company of Volunteers from the Derby, Vermont area. They fought with the 31st U.S. Army Infantry Regiment on the Vermont and New York frontier, going all the way west to Niagara, NY and Fort Erie during the course of the war. [Research of Art Kuhn5] We pick up Aaron Hartshorn (and probably Aaron "the younger" and one or two siblings) along with Jedediah Peasley, Benjamin Sanborn, and others from Stanstead, recorded on the store blotter of John S. Ball in Clarence, NY, circa 1817-1818. We know that Jedediah Peasley received a land patent in Batavia, NY, from the Holland Land Company, and was living there during the 1810 Census. He probably came there as early as 1808-1809. We know he left Stanstead in 1808. So whether Aaron, Hannah and family left for New York with Jedediah Peasley, or whether Aaron came out and settled in the area after his service in the War of 1812, we don't know. To date, no records have been found to indicate he was there earlier. He must have seen the area during his war service, and it is likely he came out after. If he was already there when the war broke out, it seems he would have joined another unit, instead of fighting with Capt.Stewart's Company that was comprised mostly of men from the Derby, VT area, just across the border from Stanstead, Quebec. There is also a gap in the ages of the children (Harriet b.1812 and Charles b. 1817) that may indicate a separation of Hannah and Aaron for a time, or they waited until they were settled again in a new locale, or children born during this time didn't survive, who knows? Much conjecture, but the pieces of the migration puzzle are much clearer than they were even a couple months ago. [Art Kuhn, Feb. 2014] According to the "The Early Settlers of New York " by Janet Wethy Foley, an early New York merchant named John S. Ball, ran a store along the Buffalo Road, on the stage route to Buffalo (Erie County). His store, located about four miles east of Clarence, had the largest selection of goods outside of Buffalo. Ball kept a list of customers who frequented his store on the store blotter. Some of the names are listed below: "...John Murray - Charges made by Orris Carr....Noah Pease..." "...Issac Brown...Benjamin Sannborn - Charge - Peasley. Horse ride from your house, home. .25.......Pearley Pease...Hannah Carr. Paid Mr. Hartshorn. Charges for Asa and Sarah. Paid Amos Chapman...Epaphras Arnold. Charge for Jedediah Peasley..." "...1817. David Brown, Pembroke, NY" "...1817. Eben Brown...1817. Shubal Sanborn, Peter Kimball. A. Hartshorn..." "...1817. Aaron Hartshorn Paid to 1 6 Descendants of Aaron HARTSHORN (1781-1847) Mrs. Sanborn..." "...1818. Jedediah Peasley...1817...Abel Foster...Dean Rogers..." These are all surnames that end up in the same locale as Aaron Hartshorn, near London, Ontario, Canada. They probably emigrated as a group from New York to Canada, circa 1819-1822. Aaron Hartshorn appears to have first arrived in the London area in 1819, when the area was still a wilderness. The first permanent settler in the town of London didn't come to the area until 1826. 3 Aaron and Hannah moved from Vermont to what was to become London, Ontario, Canada in 1823, when it was still a wilderness. Aaron Hartshorn owned 100 acres in the middle of the current town of London, and farmed in that township until his death in 1847. An article in the London Free Press, London, Ontario, July 18th, 1942, contained the following two paragraphs: "Among the early American settlers in London Township was Aaron Hartshorn who took up property at the corner of Concession 10 and the graded side road. It was in the early (1820s), when the Hartshorns drove over from Michigan Territory and pitched their tent on the land. In the Canadian forest, the Hartshorns carried on their woodworking trade, fashioning wooden buckets, wooden tubs, wooden troughs, and other articles. Irish settlers in the district were delighted to secure these products in their own neighborhood." [Research of Tom Hartson] Extensive checks with Canadian resources indicate that only a very few people by the name of Hartshorn/Hartson are listed as residing in London Twp. circa 1820 to 1850. Of the leads developed, the most likely descendants of Hartshorns from Vermont appears to be an Aaron Hartshorn (1781-1847), listed in London Twp. land records of 1819-20, for the S 1/2 of Lot 8, Con 10. This property appears to go to his son Aaron (b. about 1807 in the USA) about 1847. At least the Middlesex Co., Ontario, Canada branch of the OGS lists a 1847 land grant to Aaron Hartshorn (b. 1807). Coincidently, James Henry Hartshorn's father is reported to have died in 1847, providing more evidence that Catherine Hartshorn Foster, James Henry Hartshorn and Aaron Hartshorn (b. 1807) are siblings. It stands to reason that Aaron “the elder” would pass his land to his eldest son and namesake, Aaron “the younger.” The land is subsequently sold to the Shoebottoms (neighbors) after the 1860's, according to 1870's land plats. [Research of Art Kuhn5] Aaron “the elder” served in the military. The "Men of Upper Canada, Militia Nominal Rolls, 1828-1829" listed Privates Aaron Hartshorn and John Hartshorn (40-60 yrs.), and John Peasley (40-60 yrs.) as members of the 2nd Battalion of the 4th Regiment of Middlesex Co. Militia, under command of Col. James Hamilton November 24, 1831 - on its first establishment, June 4, 1829. All men between 16 and 60 years of age were required to join the militia. An Aaron HARTSON is listed as being in the same battalion and regiment, but mustered between the 3rd and 6th of December, 1828, in Capt. Ewart's Company from LONDON. This appears to be the same Aaron Hartson who is listed in the City of London in the 1842 Census, and who was chosen "Roadmaster" for the east side of London Twp., in 1820. Aaron HARTSHORN and Hannah PEASLEY had nine* children: Aaron Hartshorn “the younger” Harriet Hartshorn Armstrong Charles “Chas” Hartshorn Ambrose Hartshorn Mahala “Matilda” Hartshorn Sanborn Huldah Hartshorn Salmon Catherine Elizabeth Hartshorn Foster Carpenter Foster Calvin Watson Hartshorn James Henry Hartshorn *According to the Blunt Family of Danville and Hartshorn Family of Danville & Greensboro, Vermont, USA, family history, notice was given in the Danville North Star obit section dated Sept 18, 1813, “Maria d/o Mr. Aaron Hartshorn age about 4 years"; date died not given. Maria born circa 1809 may be buried in Stanstead, Quebec given her father’s residence at the time. 2 6 Descendants of Aaron HARTSHORN (1781-1847) 1.1. Aaron HARTSHORN "the younger" was born on 24 Jul 1807 in New York.7 He died on 18 Mar 1887 at the age of 79 in London, Middlesex County, Ontario7 and was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, London, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada.8 Aaron HARTSHORN "the younger" and Laura SANBORN were married on 16 Dec 1829 (date of marriage ban) in Saint Paul's Anglican Church, London, London District, Upper Canada (Middlesex, Ontario)9 by the Reverend Edward Jukes Boswell, a pioneer Anglican missionary in the area. The witnesses were Adolphus Cole and Richard Talbot. The bride was given away by Daniel Wood. [By law, marriage banns at that time had to be posted at three different places: a mill door, a distillery house door, and a large tree at the crossroads]. Laura SANBORN, daughter of Benjamin SANBORN and Mary PEASLEY, was born on 22 Aug 1811 in probably Danville, Caledonia County, Vermont.7 She died on 28 Jun 1884 at the age of 72 in London East, Middlesex County, Ontario7 (tombstone). She was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, London, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada.11 The couple resided in London Twp., London District, Upper Canada (Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada) 10 living on lot 8, concession 10, later moving to the western side of the township. Laura, the wife of a pioneer farmer was, undoubtedly, kept constantly busy with household chores. In that early day, without modern conveniences, the only way things got done was by doing. One record calls her a "matron,” but that term merely means "married woman." It is almost certain that she received little or no schooling. That knowledge comes from the only concrete clue to the woman, Laura Hartshorn: her mark or "X" on some land documents of 1871, 1880, and 1883. The documents "first [had] been read over and explained to the said Laura Hartson who said she understood the same." Another document was more explicit in saying that "the said Laura Hartson...[was]...unable to write." Being, unable to read or write in those days was commonplace. More importantly, however, there is a clear indication of her character as expressed by her family in this loving epitaph, "She made home pleasant." Aaron Hartshorn was a farmer in a time when farming was not automated. The hard work of clearing, planting, harvesting, and marketing products was an around-the-clock concern. The photo of him that survives shows a man with an ample white beard growing mostly below the chin, with a face almost stern, but capable of laughter. Large, rough hands betray his life's work. About the man's inner self one can only surmise. But evidence of a religious nature is found in this comment about him given by his granddaughter, Lillie Edyth Little, in later years, to her aunt, Miss Margaret Wade: "Mrs. Little herself has a vivid recollection of many occasions on which her grandfather Aaron Hartson spent part of a day in her father's home (Hamilton Hartson), at that time on Queens Avenue, London, a short distance east of Adelaide Street. She remembers her grandfather as an old gentleman wearing always a long, black coat and being a great reader of the Bible. " At that time, he lived at the home of one of his daughters, Mary, Mrs. Theophilus Standfield, which was on Dundas Street, east, and therefore not a very long walk from her father's house. On 16 March 1832, Aaron Hartshorn was a witness to a marriage performed by the minister, Hamilton Biggar, of Vienna, in London Township between John Sanborn and Eleanor Lamb, both, of London Township. The other witness was Barnard McElroy (McIlroy). His wife Laura and John were both siblings of Simon who married Mahala Hartshorn; Louisa Sanborn who married Daniel Wood was another sibling, and their grandson Charles Wood married Velleria Hartshorn daughter of Dean (Dennis) Hartshorn. On 21 March 1842, Aaron signed a Bargain & Sale for 50 acres of land from Patrick McDonough. This land was on the S, 1/2 of lot 6 concession 10. An Eliza McDonough, daughter of Peter McDonough, married a George Sanborn. He appeared in the census in Apr 1842 in London Twp., London District, Canada West (Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada). Aaron's family was recorded as being made up of 2 natives of the U.S. and 5 natives of British Canada. They fell into these age groups: 1-married male born 1782-1812 [Aaron, b. 1807] 1-married female born 1797-1828 [Laura, b. 1811] 2-single males born 1837-1842 [possibly James, b. 1840] 3-single females born 1828-1837 [possibly Julia, b. 1834 and Laura b. 1836) Aaron HARTSHORN and Laura SANBORN had the following children: 3 6 Descendants of Aaron HARTSHORN (1781-1847) 1.1.1.
