As I write, Derbyshire is currently ‘enjoying’ another heatwave and, without sounding all curmudgeonly, I am enjoying it about as much as my four- month-old — which is not a lot. I tend to consume news like a flannel takes in water and that too should come with a health warning at the moment. Yet there has been much to celebrate and marvel at recently. The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham provided a feel-good factor reminiscent of the 2012 London Olympic Games and I, like much of the country, got swept away in Lioness fever and loved the amazing scenes that followed England Women’s Euro 22 triumph. As a father of two daughters, the empowerment this historic win has given these elite footballers, and the inspiration they have given to many, felt like a seminal moment and these trailblazers deserve all the recognition they are receiving. My eldest’s career aspirations are evolving all the time and now extend to playing for England, which she will presumably fit in around her other career goals, which currently include (but are by no means limited to) being arap artist (don’t ask!), a rock star, a teacher and writing books. Dream big, as they say! In this edition we pay homage to the Lionesses success — we do, after all, claim Millie Bright places to cover. It was also heartening to learn of Derby’s bid to be the official home of Great British Railways and I wish the very best of luck to the city in their endeavours. Yes, Iam biased but I can think of no better place than Derby to house the HQ for Great British Railways — our heritage in this area is second to none. Again, there’s a nod to our long really amplified our wonderful local communities. Iam delighted to say that he is, however, going nowhere.
