ALL RIGHTS RES “CLASSIC”? “A classic timepiece, designed for a lady.” This is how some may describe our Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust. Maybe they’re right. Since the early 20th Century, Rolex has designed and crafted watches suited for all women’s wrists, with the same standard of excellence as for all the models that have built its legend. Always pursuing a higher standard. So, if “classic” means perpetuating tradition while combining elegance and precision, grace and resistance, beauty and performance, it is indeed a classic timepiece, designed for a lady. Ispend hours on end writing and reading about the people and places that contribute to the rich tapestry of life here. However, I decided this month it was time to not just talk the talk but, literally, walk the walk. Subsequently I headed to the Peak District, having been kindly invited to a walk with the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce’s Generation Next group, a network for young professionals aged between 18 and 35 years of age. Fortunately, I just about still qualify — for one more month at least! Despite the heat (28 degrees was more than enough for me) we enjoyed a lovely day in the capable hands of guide Richard Tower of Peak Walking Adventures; starting at Grindleford Station, before heading up Padley Gorge to Longshaw Estate, Higger Tor and Owler Tor then to Bole Hill. There’s a little write up on the Outdoor Life opener and so inspired was I by this ramble in the Peak, I have downloaded the Ethels Ready app and will be looking to tick as many off as possible in the coming months. From next month’s edition we'll be having a bit of a shake-up of our competitions. Historically, we have offered a year’s subscription for crossword and sudoku winners and whilst these puzzles will continue in the magazine, they'll be played for good old-fashioned fun! Instead, we'll be giving readers the chance each month to win fabulous prizes — such as we did last month where one lucky winner received two tickets to the opera in Buxton with a meal thrown in for good measure. The number of entries received was amazing and the winner, picked at random, has been contacted, having been one of many to have correctly answered that the first Buxton International Festival took place in 1979. This month, we're giving readers the chance to wina pair of tickets to the eagerly- anticipated Chatsworth saunquarpy BuUDy|eM xed ‘eun}aId Country Fair. Full details on the competition pages — good luck! Finally, ahead of a new regular feature on Derbyshire’s unsung heroes, we’re on the lookout for amazing people who have done incredible things and may not, to date, have had the credit they deserve. Know someone who fits the bill? Feel free to email me at [email protected]. Thanks, as ever, for reading. Mike Smith heads to Over Haddon where he discovers an incredible link with Britain’s most decorated Cold War spy and Adam Jacot de Boinod is back with his devilishly difficult ‘Great Derbyshire Quiz’. Our regular ‘My home town’ feature takes us to Swadlincote and we speak with Derbyshire’s Blood Bike team and learn of the incredible, life-saving work they do across our county. If you’re a dog lover, September’s edition is definitely for you as we speak with a local photographer who specialises taking snaps of our canine friends, whilst Bernard Bale’s chats with the stars continue as we bring you an exclusive with the one and only Tom Jones, who has more than a few fabulous things to say about Derbyshire. All this and more next month.
