A grammar book is necessarily compartmentalized; the students work in a tightly controlled atmosphere, concentrating on one or two points at a time. In the parlance of the beginner, the students “had” the modals last month, are “having” the passive now, and will “have” the subjunctive next month. Most readers, on the other hand—even elemen tary ones — plunge students into the random area of complete language experience, where they are expected to function with nearly all of German grammar on every page of text. This book offers a positive solution to the problems of such an abrupt transition. It offers drills that 1. teach students to function in the natural, uncompartmentalized language of unedited texts, 2. further their active skills so that they are able to work with progressively more difficult material, and 3. fill the class hour with meaningful exercises. THE THIRD EDITION The basic goals of the earlier editions of Der Weg zum Lesen remain unchanged in this latest edition. The major aim of this revision is to allow students to achieve these ix goals with even less effort and even greater fluency and accuracy. To this end, the following changes have been made: 1. We have added a number of new texts, most of them at the lowest level of difficulty, and we have provided these texts with exercises that allow the students to move forward even more systematically than before. 2. The more complex drill sentences have been shortened and streamlined so that the students can perform them faster and with greater control. 3. The cue-sheets accompanying the texts toward the end of the book have been revised to help the students retell the stories with minimum reliance on memory. These cue-sheets are now also followed by cued questions that elicit slightly longer, more com plex answers. DRILL TYPES 1. Introductory Exercises The “Introductory Exercises” direct the students’ attention to one or two problems while allowing them to see and understand how the rest of the sentence is constructed. Here is a sample of text with the “Introductory Exercises” derived from it: D er Milchmann schrieb auf einen Zettel: „Heute keine Butter mehr, leider.“ Frau Blum las den Zettel und rechnete zusammen, schüttelte den Kopf und rechnete noch einmal, dann schrieb sie: „Zwei Liter, 100 Gramm Butter, Sie hatten gestern keine Butter und berechneten sie mir gleichwohl.“ Introductory Exercises Supply the correct forms of the verbs in parentheses. Do each sentence in the present tense, past tense, and present perfect tense, except where otherwise indicated. A. 1. Der Milchmann_____________es auf einen Zettel. (schreiben*) x
