Th e city of Anaconda and Deer Lodge County have a consolidated government known as Anaconda-Deer Lodge, the population of which constitutes the state’s ninth largest “city”. Other cities and towns in Deer Lodge County include Galen, Georgetown, Opportunity, and Warm Springs. Th e Anaconda Copper Mining Company, once the largest copper mining, smelting, and fabricating organization in the world, gave its name to the town of Anaconda, which was the site of the company’s smelter. Th e smelter operation, Anaconda’s historic economic 2base, was shut down in 1980. Since then, Anaconda has reinvented itself as a recreation community, drawing on the Deer Lodge Valley’s wealth of natural amenities, such as the Anaconda Mountain Range, Georgetown Lake, and the Mount Haggin wildlife management area (Montana’s largest at 54,000 acres). Other tourism draws include the Old City Hall Copper Village Museum and Art Center, Washoe Park and State Fish Hatchery, and the Old Works Golf Course-Montana’s only Jack Nicklaus signature course.
