Description:Kyle and his parents have not long moved back to America after living in Cairo for four years, when tragedy strikes. Already struggling to readjust and suffering from depression, Kyle's mother's death tears his world apart. The anguish and despair are unbearable and put an even greater strain on his relationship with his father. The loss causes Kyle to start having visions where he's in the Underworld - the Duat - in which he embodies the form of Anubis, God of Embalming. The delusions of Anubis are frightening at first, but in time, Kyle welcomes them and even goes out of his way to induce them. Through Anubis' eyes in the Duat, Kyle bears witness to the nightly passage of Ra, the Sun God, and his entourage as they journey in the Mesektet - a boat traveling from west to east. The passage is fraught with danger, with many demons hell-bent on preventing Ra from being reborn at dawn. Not only must Anubis protect the Mesektet, but he also has to prepare the soul of Shani for her judgment in the Hall of the Two Truths. Both Kyle and Anubis' paths are difficult in the extreme, and Kyle learns in time that death is just the beginning. But until then, he must also learn to fight the darkness within.
