From The Director's Desk . . "Time flies when you're having fun." This adage comes to mind when I realize that almost a year has passed since I was provided the opportunity to serve in a leadership role with the DSU Alumni and Foundation. In retrospect, it has been hectic at times, fun most ofthe time, and busy all ofthe time. When I review the past year's calendar, I am reminded of events and happenings that stir the emotions. Among these are: - visiting with hundreds ofalumni who have a sincere "love" for Delta State; - meeting and visiting with Talmadge Shaver, who played on the first Delta State athletic team in 1926 : - spending countless hours with the staff in preparation for Homecoming activities and realizing the importance when smiling and loyal alumni return to campus to visit with classmates and friends; DonA. Skelton - observing the diligence and efforts of staffand community personnel as they work to overcome the ravages of"Ice Storm '94"; - the warmth and appreciation ofalumni and friends when they are recognized and honored for their benevolence. It is with sadness that I recall the loss of alumni and friends during the past year who have helped make Delta State "special" for all of us. Among these are Jim Burnside, Ethel Cain, Sammy Cranford, John Ray Ricks, Diane Stewart, and John Yurkow. They "touched" so many lives during their DSU tenure. Also departed are Morris Lewis and Corley Cortright, who played instrumental roles in establishing the B. F. Smith Chair, William McCain, editor ofthe first DSU Annual in 1930, and Mattie Lou Meador Neill, who was selected "Outstanding Alumnus" in 1971. While the status ofthe Ayers' Case has created a degree ofuncertainty regarding higher education through- out the state, there exists an excitement at Delta State University. This "excitement" is evidenced by the presence of4000 ambitious students, a caring faculty, and an administration dedicated to a mission ofproviding Mississippi's be=f higher education opportunity. We, as alumni and friends, are interested in helping preserve the traditions and heritage ofDelta State, but v also have a responsibility in assuring its academic integrity for the future. OUTSTANDING ALUMNUS NOMINATIONS DUE Each year at homecoming the Alumni Association presents the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award to a former student who has distinguished himself/herself by mak- ing significant contributions to human or institutional programs in which a situation, institution, or movement has been improved because of his/her personal participation. The selection is made from nomi- nees submitted by members of the Alumni Association, and the final selection is made by the awards com- mittee. Ifyou know ofsomeone deserving ofthis honor, please send their name, address, achievements and honors to Retirees who were recently honored at a reception included (1 to rt) Mrs. the DSU Alumni Office, Box 3104, Beulah Lewis, Library; Troyce Taylor, Physical Plant; Mrs. Lila Tatum, Cleveland, MS 38733.
