It is even said that the practice was brought from the Middle East to Europe during the Crusades. While it originated out of necessity, in more recent times it has become a more decorative art, and is now a popular craft genre. Macramé is easy to pick up and it's perfect for people wanting to incorporate handmade items into their interior styling. Most of the projects in this book use natural, undyed cord, which works easily with all kinds of interiors, from country style to bohemian. The careful instructions in this book allow even beginners to complete the projects, so why not have a go at making interior objects from macramé? Decorative Macrame_Interior TJ.indd 3 12/3/20 10:18 AM Tapestries and Other Wall Decorations A macramé tapestry made from natural twine is the perfect accent for a simple interior. Try using a diff erent color to suit the atmosphere of the room. The Pendant: A Basic Tapestry Adaptation This piece is created by using only what could be called the foundations of macramé—the square knot and the half knot. Although there are only two types of knot, the number of knots and placement of pattern allows for a range of expression, which is the appeal of macramé. The pendant uses fi ne cord and has less repetition of pattern, but otherwise is made in exactly the same way as the tapestry. The instructions are explained in detail with photos, so this piece is recommended for complete beginners. Designed by Märchen Art Studio Finished sizes: pendant (left) approx. 1½ x 3½” (3.5 x 9 cm) tapestry (right) approx. 15 x 9½” (12 × 24 cm); Instructions on page 26 4 Decorative Macrame_Interior TJ.indd 4 12/3/20 10:18 AM A Two-Tone Tapestry This work is formed from three long, narrow belt-like pieces, one of which is longer and in a different color from the other two. Altering the number of small diamond motifs allows each section to be shortened or lengthened, while adding more sections makes for a wider tapestry. Designed by Narumi Kato Finished size: approx. 7 x 18” (18 x 45 cm) Instructions on page 34 5 Decorative Macrame_Interior TJ.indd 5 12/3/20 10:18 AM A Native American Tapestry The fringing on both sides of this work is striking. Loosening the twist in the cords brings out more volume and creates a piece that is Native American in fl avor. The center and side sections are knotted separately, bringing a sense of depth to the work. The diagonal, dimensional twisted pattern on the sides is formed from diagonal half hitches. Designed by macco Finished size: approx. 12½ x 15” (32 x 38 cm) Instructions on page 35 6 Decorative Macrame_Interior TJ.indd 6 12/3/20 10:18 AM A Square Tapestry This tapestry is like a sampler of patterns made from double half hitches. Working in diagonal half hitches and changing direction results in an arrowhead pattern, while adding a row of horizontal double half hitches is effective as a break in the pattern. The four horizontal diamond motifs recall a dreamcatcher, so maybe this will be a lucky item that brings happiness. Designed by Aki Hagino Finished size: approx. 9 x 13¾” (23 x 35 cm) Instructions on page 36 7 Decorative Macrame_Interior TJ.indd 7 12/3/20 10:18 AM A V-Motif Tapestry The use of a circular piece of wood rather than driftwood or a wooden rod to secure the cord makes for a fresh new approach to display. As the cord used to create the work is thick, the double half hitches and half knots take on a different vibe from that of fi ner cord. Loosening the twists in the cord and leaving the ends long easily creates volume, but you are free to cut them to whatever length best suits your interior style.
