The purposes of the London and Paris 2011 EWG-DSS workshops were to bring together academics, researchers, practitioners, and enterprises interested in implementing collaborative perspectives for different kinds of environments. The workshops themes were “Decision Support Systems” and “Collaborative Decision Making,” respectively. Hence, the scientific areas of interest for se- lectedcontributionsfromthesetwooutstandingworkshopswere:(a)distributed groupsupportsystems;(b)collaborativedecisionmaking;(c)supplychainman- agement; (d) information technologies; and (e) simulation. In addition, since effective collaboration leads to collaborative advantages and also to a better partnership performance, the proper understanding and visualization is to be supported by considering different perspectives of collaborations in real envi- ronments. In this context, the London and Paris 2011 EWG-DSS workshops’ selectedpapersarerepresentativeofthecurrentresearchactivitiesintheareaof decision support systems and addresses these challenges by considering a large numberofresearchtopics:frommorestaticandabstractones, suchasconceptual models, to more dynamic and technical ones, such as decision support systems and software simulations and specification, from more enterprise-oriented ones, such as business knowledge management process and collaborativespecification and requirements to more multi-objective and multi-criteria expert systems to support the different business behaviors in collaborative environments. Both 2011 EWG-DSS workshops, London and Paris, considered 39 and 13 papers for oral presentation each. From the total of 52 papers, 11 papers were selected for publication in this edition by considering their content, structure and presentation quality. This led to a “full-paper” acceptance ratio of 22%, VI Preface and shows the intention of preserving a high-quality forum for the next edi- tions of EWG-DSS workshops. The proceedings selection and publication pro- cess was based on a double-blind paper evaluation method: each selected paper wasreviewedby atleasttwointernationallyknownexpertsfromthe EWG-DSS ProgramCommittee. The high quality of the London and Paris EWG-DSS workshop programs wasenhancedbyfivekeynotelectures, deliveredbydistinguishedguestswhoare renownedexperts in their fields, including (alphabetically): Alex Duffy (Univer- sityofStrathclyde,Glasgow,UK),PhilipPowell(SchoolofBusiness,Economics andInformaticsatBirkbeck,UniversityofLondon,UK),andRitaRibeiro(CA3 – Computational Intelligence Research Group at UNINOVA, Portugal) for the London’s workshop, and (alphabetically): Denis Bouyssou (Centre National de Recherche Scientifique in Paris, France) and Sihem Amer-Yahia (Qatar Com- putingResearchCenter,Qatar)fortheParisworkshop.Theirlectureswerevery interestingandtherewasahighlevelofinformationexchangeforfurtherfruitful cooperation among all participants. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to all those who contributed to the EWG-DSS workshops activities in 2011, including authors, reviewers, Program Committee members, andinstitutionalsponsors. Finally, wehopeyouwillfindthecontentsusefuland interesting to tackle many of the collaborative challenges, in terms of research and practice activities, when addressing any of the related researchareas. The main purpose of the EWG-DSS is to establish a platform for encourag- ing state-of-the-art high quality research and collaboration within the decision support systems (DSS) community. Additional EWG-DSS aims are to: (cid:129) Encourage the information exchange among practitioners, end-users, and re- searchers in the area of DSS (cid:129) Enforcenetworkingamongthe DSScommunitiesandfacilitateactivities that are essential for starting up international cooperation research and projects (cid:129) Facilitate professional academic and industrial opportunities for its members (cid:129) Favor the development of innovative models, methods, and tools in the field DSS and related areas (cid:129) ActivelypromotetheinterestinDSSinthescientificcommunitybyorganizing dedicated workshops, seminars, mini-conferences, and conference streams in majorconferences, aswellaseditingspecialandcontributedissuesinrelevant scientific journals. The EWG-DSS was founded during a memorable EURO Summer Institute on DSS that took place atMadeira,Portugal,in May1989.This Summer Institute was organizedby two well-known academics of the OR community: Jean-Pierre Brans and Jos´e Paixa˜o. It enjoyed the participation of 24 young researchers of 16 different nationalities. The number of EWG-DSS members has substantially grownalongtheyears.Bythe endof2011wewereover150registeredmembers, coming from various nationalities. Throughtheyears,quiteafewwell-qualifiedresearchco-operationshavebeen establishedwithin the groupmembers, whichhave generatedvaluable contribu- tions to the DSS field in journal publications. Since its creation, the EWG-DSS has held annual meetings in various European countries, and has taken active part in the EURO Conferences on decision-making-relatedsubjects. Since the beginning of 2011, the EWG-DSS coordination board has been composed of: Pascale Zarat´e (France), Fa´tima Dargam (Austria), Rita Ribeiro (Portugal), Jorge E.
