I gratefully acknowledge the contribution of Watfa Krayssa, MMS, PA-C to this book. Foreword Alvin Toffl er said, “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” In the face of rapid advances in the inclusion of genetics into patient care, new treatment methodologies, and huge increases in our pharmaceutical armamentarium we will all fi nd that which we have learned must indeed be unlearned and relearned. It is no wonder that new graduates utilize as many review systems as possible in preparation for their Physician Assis- tant National Certifying Examination (PANCE); this text addresses the learning cycle most eff ectively. Morton Diamond, a PA educator since 1994 and previously a practic- ing cardiologist, has constructed a unique and highly eff ective system that reviews medical concepts while at the same time teaches critical thinking. Rather than taking a body system approach he splits his book into two sec- tions, the second building off the fi rst. In doing so he instructs as eff ectively as he questions. In the fi rst section, E SSENTIALS, he poses specifi c clinical scenarios and questions using a multiple-correct answer methodology. This approach allows for specifi c, detailed feedback on the range and depth of one’s knowledge. The likelihood of answering the questions accurately just by guessing is signifi cantly reduced using this method because the test taker must select the correct c ombination of answers. Further, this method avoids the “one right answer,” lower-order mentality so antithetical to the real world of medicine. Answers in the text are provided alongside specifi c teaching points central to understanding the material. This approach ensures the integra- tion of key concepts into the review of each subject. He also provides body system classifi cation labels so that students can focus on the content they most need to review. The second section, P ERFORMANCE, takes a more traditional approach to questions, with single correct answers for each, just as one would encoun- ter on the PANCE and PANRE. However, even in this section, the correct answer is keyed back to its earlier discussion in E SSENTIALS, an approach that provides excellent testing as well as critical review. As much as we might sometimes wish, learning isn’t a “one and done” proposition. Dr. Diamond’s approach makes this edition helpful to the new grad as well as to the older professional continuing in the learning cycle. Dr. Diamond seems to understand exactly what a new graduate PA needs to know, in addition to what practicing PAs need to know to recertify and vii viii Foreword remain in practice. New graduates and recertifying PAs will fi nd this book an invaluable tool in preparing for their next, critical examination.
