INTRODUCTION Theexclusively SouthAmericangenusCyanallagma Kennedy contains 13species of which nine (C. acutum Ris, C. demarmelsiCruz, C. gaianii De Marmels, C. laterale (Selys), C. ovigerum (Calvert), C. risi De Marmels, C. tamaense De Marmels, C. tepuianum DeMarmels, andC. thelkterionDe Marmels) occurinthe mountainousregions ofVenezuela,Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. DE MARMELS(1997)provided thelatestinformationonthesespecies (except forC. acutum).Asmallergroupcomprisedof C.bonariense(Ris), C. interruptum(Selys), C. nigrinuchale (Selys), and C. trimaculatum(Selys) occur in southern Brazil, Argentina andChile.Thewell-known C. interruptumismostaustralzygopteranof thenewworldwithrecords extending as farsouthas 50°southlatitude(MUZON, 1995). During atriptoSalesdpolis, SaoPaulo(SP) Stateon 14Marchand3April 1999, my fatherandI collected 15malesand 3femalesofaCyanallagma whichIwas unableto identify. Icompared these specimens with congeneric specimens of Cyanallagma in my collection and using literature.Initially, I believed they represented thepoorly known C. trimaculatumeventhough theparaprocts were smallerthantheillustrationbySANTOS(1965).Atmyrequest,Dr DennisPaulson sent me copies ofthe original descriptions ofAcanthagrion trimaculatum,A. 346 F.A.A. Lencioni nigrinuchale andA. interruptum. Fromthese descriptions I concludedthat the illustrationby Santos was partially correct, andthatthe specimens I collected in Salesopolis represented anewspecies. In April, 2000 I visitedthe Selys Longchamps collectionin Brussels where I examined type material ofCyanallagma interruptum, C. nigrinuchale and C. trimaculatum.Withphotos oftheonlyoneintactmaleofC. trimaculatum, provided mebyMrJeromeConstant,Iincludeanillustrationoftheappendages ofthispoorly knownspecies. 1 trimaculatum(Syntype) 2 interruptum(ARGENTINA: ChubutProv.) 3 nigrinuchale(Brazil; MinasGerais, Lagoa dos Cordois) 4 bonariense (ARGENTINA:Buenos AiresProv.)
