In response to user requests, the library broadened this definition in 1988 to encompass reviews of current thinking on a given subject, regardless of the age of the literature cited, and to include categories of material previously excluded. Types of articles now considered to be reviews include academic, or classical, reviews; tutorial, or didactic or subject, reviews; multicase, or epidemiologic, reviews; consensus conferences; reviews of known or published cases; and state of the art reviews. Materials with the following characteristics are not considered as reviews: case reports or original research articles containing a review of the literature as an adjunct; statistical and epidemiological surveys; bibliographies which comprise only a list of references; historical articles; monthly summaries of a subject area which appear as a regular feature in journals; and theses. Citations to reviews are included in the "Bibliography of Medical Reviews" section of the monthly INDEX MEDICUS and CUMULATED INDEX MEDICUS, as well as in the Subject Section and Author Section of each. In the latter sections, users will be able to distinguish review articles from standard citations by the number of references shown in parentheses at the end of the source. O ref." will indicate that the bibliographic references were not printed in the article. A FIBERS see NERVE FIBERS, MYELINATED ABDOMEN CK Jr. Radiol Clin North Am 1996 Jul;34(4):791-806 (86 ref.)
