The first stresses the role of culture indeterminingpopulationparameters,whereasthesecondpositsthat demographic rates reflect adaptive behaviors that are the products of naturalselection.Boththeseapproachesareutilizedtosearchfordemo- graphicstrategiesinvariedculturalandtemporalcontextsrangingfrom African pastoralists through North American postindustrial societies. Although both of these approaches have achieved notable successes, eachhasignoredoractivelydisparagedtheother.Inanattempttoiniti- ateadiscussionbetweenthetwofields,thisbookdevelopsaframework recognizingculturalandbiologicaldemographicstrategies.
