As a professor of TEFL, he spent most of his years at the Julius-Maximilians- University of Würzburg where he was Chair of TEFL from 1980 until 2004. Additionally, as a visiting professor, he was invited to teach at numerous uni- versities across the world – for instance, in Cambridge, Beijing, Tokyo, Caen, London, Nanchang/China, Vancouver, and Toronto. Some of his achievements include, to name but a few, the award of the Bavarian Order of Merit (Bayerischer Verdienstorden) in 2012, the American Order of Merit in 2008, the International Peace Prize in 2005, and Dr. h.c. (Caen) in 1996 and Professor h.c. (Nanchang, China). Rüdiger Ahrens has devoted much of his lifetime to research and teaching focusing on the English Renaissance, English literature and culture of the 18th century, literary theory and criticism, 20th century drama and novels, new Anglophone literatures and cultures as well as the teaching of literature in general. He has published over 100 contributions/papers and also over 100 reviews or shorter contributions. In addition, some of his edited volumes have achieved great respect both in literary criticism circles and in the TEFL world. Among these are, for example, Englische und amerikanische Literaturtheorie (2 vols., 1978–1979, with Erwin Wolff), William Shakespeare: Didaktisches Handbuch (3 vols., 1982), Europäische Sprachenpolitik – European Language Policy (2003), William Shakespeare: Zeit – Werk – Wirkung. Aufsätze (2004), and Moderne Dramendidaktik für den Englischunterricht (2008, with Matthias Merkl and Maria Eisenmann). While co-editing a number of book series such as Anglistik: An International Journal of English Studies; Anglistische Forschungen; Anglo-amerikanische Studien – Anglo-american Studies; and Grundlagen der Anglistik und Amerikanistik, Rüdiger Ahrens’ impact on research in the field of foreign language education has remained and still remains highly influential. As the editor of this volume, and in the name of all of his colleagues and friends, I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Rüdiger Ahrens’ remarkable academic achievements throughout his long career as a university teacher, lecturer, researcher, and doctoral supervisor. He has supported and supervised over forty Ph.D. and postdoctoral students for over four decades and, in doing so, has succeeded in contributing to an expansion of TEFL as an aca- demic and practice-oriented field of research. 6 Tribute I would like to congratulate Rüdiger Ahrens to his 80th birthday. I wish you, in the name of all of the authors who contributed to this volume as well as all other close friends and colleagues, all the best, happiness and health as well as many, many more fruitful years committed to academic work in the field of for- eign language education as well as to your private life. Theresa Summer, editor Acknowledgements First and foremost, the book would not have been possible without the contributions of the many authors who have devoted their time and energy to this project. I am grateful for their work for this volume. I would also like to extend particular appreciation to the research assistants Lena Meyer, Alex Hemmerich and Carmen Alles at the Julius-Maximilians-University of Würzburg in the TEFL Department, who have helped with organisational issues as well as stylistic revisions. I would further like to extend particular appreciation to Professor Maria Eisenmann and the financial support granted through the Julius-Maximilians- University of Würzburg for this book project. Particular thanks are due to the editorial team at Peter Lang Verlag – Academic International Publishing. I am also grateful to my family for their support. Last but not least, I would like to pay special tribute to Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Rüdiger Ahrens to whom this volume is dedicated to in honour of his 80th birthday. He has been extremely supportive in the numerous doctoral research projects that he has supervised throughout his career as a professor and even as professor emeritus of Englische Fachdidaktik at the University of Trier and Würzburg. As of summer 2018, he has supervised over forty PhD theses and postdoctoral dissertations – all of which have contributed to the development of TEFL research in various fields ranging from literary studies and inter-/transcul- tural learning to textbook analysis. He has inspired numerous young researchers to pursue an academic career or use the knowledge and competences acquired during their PhD in other fields of work. It is his motivating and encouraging feedback that has inspired the authors and me, the editor of this volume, to con- tribute to and publish this book.
