CultsandRitesinAncientGreece ThisvolumeassemblesthirteenhighlyinfluentialarticleswrittenbyMichaelH.Jamesonovera periodofnearlyfiftyyears,editedandupdatedbytheauthorhimself.Theyrepresentboththe scopeandthesignaturestyleofJameson’sengagementwiththesubjectofancientGreekreligion. Thecollectioncomplementstheoriginalpublicationsintwoways:firstly,itmakesthearticles moreaccessible;andsecondly,thevolumeoffersreadersauniqueopportunitytoobservethat overalmostfivedecadesofscholarshipJamesondevelopedadistinctivemethod,asignaturestyle, aparticularperspective,awayoflookingthatcouldperhapsbefittinglycalleda“Jamesonian approach”tothestudyofGreekreligion.Thisapproach,recognizableineacharticleindividually, becomesunmistakablethroughtheconcentrationofpaperscollectedhere.Theparticularsofthe Jamesonian approach are insightfully discussed in the five introductory essays written for this volumebyleadingworldauthoritiesonpolisreligion. michael h. jamesonreceivedhisB.A.inGreekfromtheUniversityofChicagoattheageof seventeen.AfterservingintheU.S.Navy,hereturnedtotheUniversityofChicagowhereheearned hisPh.D.in1949,withhisdissertation“TheOfferingatMeals:ItsPlaceinGreekSacrifice.”He spent1949–50attheAmericanSchoolofClassicalStudiesatAthenswithaFulbrightFellowship. AfterthreeyearsattheUniversityofMissouri,heacceptedaFordFellowshipattheInstitutefor SocialAnthropologyattheUniversityofOxfordin1953–4.In1954hebecameProfessorofClassics attheUniversityofPennsylvania,andlaterdirectoroftheGraduateGroupinAncientHistory until1976.InthatyearhewasappointedProfessorofClassicsatStanfordUniversity;in1977he becameCrossettProfessorofHumanisticStudies,apositionhehelduntilhisdeathinAugust 2004.Throughouthislongcareerhereceivednumerousawardsandvisitingfellowships,including aGuggenheimFellowship(1966–7).Hewroteoversixtyarticlesonthepolitical,ecological,and socialaspectsofthepracticeofreligionintheancientGreekpolis.Asanepigrapherhepublished manyinscriptionsinInscriptionesGraecae.AsanarchaeologisthebegantheexcavationofHalieis in1962,andwasadirectorandorganizeroftheArgolidExplorationProject,anarchaeological, ecological, and ethnographic survey during the period 1979–83, which resulted in numerous publications,especiallyAGreekCountryside:TheSouthernArgolidfromPrehistorytothePresent Day(1994),co-authoredwithTjeerdVanAndelandC.N.Runnels.Histeachingandexample inspiredagenerationofscholars. allaireb.stallsmith,nowAssociateProfessorofHistoryatTowsonUniversityinTowson, MD,wroteherPh.D.dissertationunderthedirectionofMichaelH.Jameson.Herpublications include“OneColony,TwoMotherCities:CretanAgricultureunderVenetianandOttomanRule,” inJ.DavisandS.Davies(eds.)BetweenVeniceandIstanbul:ColonialLandscapesinEarlyModern Greece,HesperiaSupplement40,2007,and(asAllaireBrumfield)TheAtticFestivalsofDemeterand theirRelationtotheAgriculturalYear(1981). paul cartledgeistheinauguralA.G.LeventisProfessorofGreekCultureEmeritus,inthe FacultyofClassics,UniversityofCambridge,andaLeventisSeniorResearchFellowofClareCollege, Cambridge.Heistheauthor,co-author,editor,andco-editorofsometwenty-fivebooks,co-edits twomonographseries,andsitsontheeditorialadvisoryboardsofthreelearnedjournals.Hismost recentpublicationsincludeAncientGreece:AVeryShortIntroduction(2011),andAfterThermopylae: TheOathofPlataeaandtheEndoftheGraeco-PersianWar(2013).
