This conference was the fourth in the series and brought together an international group of experts whose research focuses on the mechanisms by which innate and adaptive immunity is mounted in the host and the cellular and signaling pathways that lead to effective immunity. The conference included sessions dedicated to host recognition of and response to pathogens, innate immune responses, antigen presentation, and adaptive immunity. The goal of this conference was to foster scienti fi c exchange between these immunological fi elds, and promote discus- sion on the interactions between innate and adaptive immunity during host responses. The “4th Crossroads between Innate and Adaptive Immunity” Aegean Conference, with its highly interactive program, succeeded in bring- ing closely together scientists from around the world to discuss and establish collaborations in critical areas of innate and adaptive immunity. Schoenberger Atlanta, GA, USA Bali Pulendran v Acknowledgements We would like to thank all the participants who attended the conference and shared their data and knowledge freely. This willingness to share new data, closely interact, and discuss is at the core of the Crossroads conferences and makes them the wonderful scientifi c experience they are. We especially would like to thank those who contributed chapters to this book, and we greatly appre- ciate their efforts and dedication. We would like to thank the people at Springer for giving us their support and the opportunity to publish these proceedings in their Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology book series, with spe- cial thanks to Jacob Gallay for assembling and formatting the chapters. We would also like to thank the Aegean Conferences Organization for making the meeting possible and especially Dimitrios Lambris for his superb efforts in bringing the many organizational aspects of the Conference seamlessly together. Finally we would like to acknowledge the generous support from Aegean Conferences, eBioscience, P fi zer, Kirin, Springer, The Institute for Molecular Medicine and Infectious Disease at Drexel University College of Medicine, and Nature Immunology, without their support this meeting would not have been possible. Thank you all and we hope to see you all again in 2013! Philadelphia, PA, USA Peter D. Katsikis La jolla, CA, USA Stephen P.
