Our readers will find in var ious volumes not only a generous selection of reprinted articles and revic:ws but original essays, bibliographies, manuscript selections, and other materials brought to public attention for the first time. This volume, Critical EJJa)'J on Don DeLillo, is the most comprehensive gathering of essays ever published on one of che most important modern writers in the United States. le contains both a sizable gathering of early reviews and a broad selection of more mod ern scholarship. Among the authors of reprinted articles and reviews are Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, Diane Johnson, Nelson Algren, George Will, David Cowart, Paula Bryant, Silvia Caporale Bizzini, and Thomas LeClair. In addition co a substantial introduction by Hugh Ruppersburg and Tim Engles, which surveys Delillo's career and critical responses co it, there are also four original essays commissioned specifically for publication in chis volume. Glen Scocc Allen explores the unique manifestation of postmodern paranoia in Rainer's Star, while Mark Osteen concerns himself with the "marketing obs<:s sion" in Running Dog. Two new studies deal with Underworld: John N. Duvall is concerned with "baseball, aesthetics, and ideology," and Arthur Saltzman with the "awful symmetries" presented in the novel. We are confident that this book will make a permanent and significant contribuciori to the study of American literature. JAMES NA(;EL U11iver1ity of Gef/rgia .
