Initiallyknownasthe professions. Committedtolifelongeducationandtheadvancement PennsylvaniaMuseumandSchoolofIndustrialArt,theinstitution ofthearrsinoursociety,theUniversityservesasaneducational wasestablishedinresponsetotheinterestinartandtheArt andcreativeresourcefortheartscommunityandasamatrix, CentennialExposition. In 1948,theschoolbecameknownasthe catalyst,andnexusforartsactivitiesandorganizations. Its PhiladelphiaMuseumSchoolofArt,reflectingtheexpanded instructionandrelatedresearch,production,andserviceactivities programsthattrainedartistsinmanyotherareas,includingthe fosteraestheticexcellenceandcreativityandencourageinteraction finearts. Theschoolreceivedaccreditationin 1959,andin1964 amongthearts. separatedfromtheMuseumtobecomethePhiladelphiaCollege ofArt. Today,thePhiladelphiaCollegeofArtandDesign(PCAD) ofTheUniversityoftheArtsofferscurriculaincrafts,design,fine arts,mediaarts,museumeducation,andarteducation. TheperformingartsprogramsofTheUniversityoftheArtsdate from 1870,whenthreegraduatesoftheConservatoryofLeipzig openedoneofthefirstEuropean-styleconservatoriesofmusicin America: thePhiladelphiaMusicalAcademy(PMA). PMA becameanindependentcollegeofmusicin 1950,grantinga BachelorofMusicdegreeafterafour-yearcourseofstudy-oneof onlyeightsuchmusiccollegesinthenationatthetime. While stillofferingonlyamusicprogram,theschoolchangeditsnameto thePhiladelphiaCollegeofPerformingArts(PCPA)in 1976,the firstsuchcollegeinPennsylvania. Oneyearlatertheformer PhiladelphiaDanceAcademybecamepartofPCPAandin 1983 theSchoolofTheaterwascreated,thusachievingthecollege'sideal programofstudies: dance,music,andtheaterarts. In 1985,PCAandPCPAjoinedtobecomethePhiladelphia CollegesoftheArts,andin 1987,TheUniversityoftheArtswas inaugurated. BeginningintheFallof1996,theUniversitywill introduceanewacademicunit,theCollegeofMediaandCommu- nication,whichwillemphasizethecross-fertilizationofart, technologyandcommunication. Thefirstprogramtobeoffered willbeinWritingforMediaandPerformance,followedby MultimediaDesignin 1997.
