Bibliographical Note This Dover edition, first published in 2003, is an unabridged republication of the work originally published in 1962 by Theatre Arts Books, New York. The faintness of some of the very fine lines and details in the illustrations derive entirely from the source. The reprint, therefore, is a faithful reproduction of the original in all respects. For with such help I have managed to obtain fresh translations from the passages which bear upon costume details so that I am able to emphasize particular interesting points. Chief amongst such friends is Professor Kitto who read my first rough copy and added many apt and stimulating suggestions and comments. My investigations have been aided greatly by the award of a Research Grant from the University that enabled me to go to Greece and make drawings and actually handle much of the smaller statuary as well as sense the atmosphere of the great theatres that still retain much of their original significance. The Staff of the British School at Athens smoothed my paths in many directions; I am also indebted to the Museo Nazionale at Naples who gave me every possible assistance. For translations and double checkings of difficult passages and puzzling drawings I am chiefly beholden to James Tester, Professor John Cook, David Campbell, Michael Wotton and a young friend and neighbour John Hawks, who has since won a Classics scholarship to Cambridge. The books that I have found most useful are those by Sir Arthur Pickard- Cambridge, The Theatre of Dionysus at Athens and Dramatic Festivals at Athens, Professor W. Beare’s The Roman Stage, Professor T. B. L. Webster’s Greek Theatre Production, Martin Robertson’s Skira book on Greek Paintings and of course the works of Professor H. D. F. Kitto. Each of these specialists has thrown a different light on a fascinating and elusive subject. Of other friends Jane Kitto, who nobly retyped the whole book for me under some considerable pressure for time, deserves more than an acknowledgement – so I have dedicated the book to her as a small token of my very great appreciation. At the peak of its perfection in the fifth century B.C., the glory of classical Greek drama was matched by the magnificence of its costumes. This work describes how performers were dressed in plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, and explains how the actors' performances influenced the cut o
