Berta, Fani, Renato, and Jayme Saltz in front of Casa Vitoria, Uruguaiana, Brazil, 1963 In 1955, my parents, Jayme and Berta Saltz, settled in the small town of Uruguaiana, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul (“The Pampas”), at the Brazil-Argentina border. Children of Eu- ropean immigrants, they opened Casa Vitoria, a small department store serving the gau- chos—the people of South Brazil and Argentina. The store was named in celebration of the victory of the allies over Nazi Germany, hence Vitoria. My sisters and I learned early in life that things do not come easily, and you must work hard to achieve your goals. We were expected to get the best grades in school while working half a day in the store and spending the other half in school. Many of my fondest childhood memories derive from my experiences at Casa Vitoria. It is a joy to remember the days spent helping employees sell all types of products to clients, work- ing as the cashier, wrapping presents, driving my mom crazy, or playing in numerous rooms and attic gallerias with my friends. I dedicate this book to my parents—for the wonderful childhood and valuable life experi- ences they imparted, for the priceless moments I had, and for the basic life and business lessons I learned at Casa Vitoria. I thank them for their wisdom and vision in building a fu- ture for themselves and their children in the small town of Uruguaiana, Brazil. They taught me first hand how to treat clients/patients with the utmost respect regardless of their race, religious background, or financial status. I also learned the value of a strong work ethic, and the importance of honesty and respect to staff. These principles continue to guide me today in my plastic surgery practice and at Spa Vitória, which is named in honor of my parents and their store.
