GARNER College President I am pleased to welcome you to Copiah-Lincoln Community College, and I hope that your visit will be an enjoyable one. Our coaching staff is dedicated to providing the best training for our athletes and to providing an opportunity for them to learn and practice good sportsmanship while they enjoy the sport in a com- petitive manner. Both coaches and players have worked hard to prepare for the season. In addition, our band, cheerleaders, and other support groups have also worked hard to prepare for a great sea- son for all sports. I ask that you support all of these groups through your attendance and enthusiasm throughout the year. For many years Co-Lin has had a rich tradition ofsuccessful sports programs. This tradition has been established by hard work and dedication, as well as talent, on the part of coaches and student ath- letes. We wish them the very best as they represent us in the competitive arena this year. To our visiting coaches and athletic teams we extend a special welcome. We extend our best wishes as you participate in this sporting event. To our visitors, friends and colleagues, we hope that your stay is an enjoyable one. We welcome you back at any time. Coaching Staff GWYN YOUNG Athletic Director Women's Basketball Serving the college as athletic director since 1989, Gwyn Young hasbeen head coach for the Lady Wolves basketball team for 22 years. Since coming to Co-Lin he has seen his team win title after title and has compiled a record of 450 wins and 156 losses to rank him in the top winningest NJCAAcoaches in the nation. TheLadyWolvesaccomplishmentsduringCoachYoung'sstayhavebeen numerous: 14 regular season 1st place finishes, 8 South Division Championships, 12 State Tournaments Appearances, State Championships in 1993 and 1997, Runner-up State Champions 1983, 1984 and 1998, Runner-up Region XXIII Championships in 1990 and 1996, Region XXIII Champions in 1989, 1993, and 1997,NationalTournamentappearancesin 1989, 1993and 1997. Coach Young's team finished 4th in the 1989 National Tournament and has been Nationally Ranked consistently at Co-Lin. YoungwasnamedRegionXXIIICoachoftheYearin 1989, 1993and 1997. CoachoftheYearhonors were also received by CoachYoung from the MACJC and theMAC in 1993.Younghasalsobeennamed a Clarion-LedgerCoachofthe Year forJuniorColleges onnumerous occasions. Young also serves as a mathematics instructor. He holds an associate of arts degree from Co-Lin, a bachelor's degree from Mississippi College, and master's degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. Young is married to the formerVelesta Smith, and theyhave twochildren, Lane, age 22, andJessica, age 19. BROOME PHILLIP Head Football Coach Phillip Broome is in his fourth year as head football coach for the Wolves. His 1995 Wolves posted an 8-2 record, earninghim and his coaching staff "Coach of the Year" hon- ors. Broomeandhisstaffwerealsoselectedtocoachthe 1995southcommunitycollegeall- stars, winning 23-7 over the north squad. Last year Broome's Wolves posted a 5-5 record. Broome served as defensive coordinator forfive yearsprior tobeingnamed head football coach in 1995. He was a member of the coaching staff in 1989 and 1990 when the Wolves were South State Champs. He has numerous players playing Division 1 football with vir- tually 100% transfer and graduation rate. Broome is alsoemployedasa science instructor, receivingtheNISODaward forexcel- lence inteaching in 1994. He earned hisbachelor ofscience and masterofscience degrees from the University ofSouthern Mississippi. He is married to the former Cynthia Batson, and they have two sons, Tyler, 11, and Caleb, 6. DAVID CROSS Assistant Football Coach Inhis fifhyear as an assistant for the Wolves, David Cross serves as defensive coordi- nator and defensive line coach. From 1991 to 1993 he served as head football coach and athleticdirectoratGreensboroHighSchoolinGreensboro,Alabama. While theretheteam posted a 22-8 mark and advanced to the state playoffs in all three years. Cross also spent threeyears as defensivecoordinatoratMarionInstitute and twoyearsatMississippiState with Coach Rocky Felker. He earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education and later received his master ofeducation degree, all fromMississippiStateUniversity.Additional studies were completed at Blinn College and Livingston University. A Starkvillenative,Cross ismarried to the formerSherryTanksleyofLouisville. They have two children, Kristen Nicole, 10, andJames Kyle, 5. Coaching Staff CALVIN M. GREEN Assistant Football Coach Calvin M. Greenjoined the coaching staffat Co-Lin inJanuary, 1994. Green graduated from Monticello High School and attended Copiah-Lincoln Junior College afterhigh school. He graduated fromAlcorn State University. He served as assistant defensive back coach at East Mississippi Community College at Scooba for two years from 1992 and 1993 under the former Mississippi State All American and National Football League standoutTom Goode. Green also did his practice coaching at Lawrence County High School. At Monticello High School he was a three-year letterman defensive back. At Co-Lin hewasamemberofCoachRayIshee'sstatechampionshipand EastBowlchampionsteam in 1985. In 1986, he received honors as most valuable defensiveback,AllState,AllRegion XXIII and waschosenfortheAll-Starteam.AtAlcornStatehewasalettermanin 1987and a member of thenation'sbest secondary in 1988. He is married to the former Falana Armstrong and they are parents of a small son, Farrod. CHARLES SUTTON Assistant Football Coach For 15 years, wide receiver coach Charles Sutton has been providing leadership as a member oftheWolvescoaching staff. While associated with the Wolfpack,hehas seen the Wolves capture the state title in 1985, and has seen the team capture the south division crown in 1986, 1989, and 1990. Sutton served as assistant track coach in 1987, when the team won the state title. He also currently serves as counselor for the college's Upward Bound program, a position he has held for 16 years. BeforejoiningtheCo-Linstaff,Suttonworked as aclassroom teacherandcounselorin the Lawrence County School System. He earned his bachelor of science degree from Alcorn State University, and he has a Master of Education fromJackson State University. Sutton and his wife, Evelyn, have two sons, Victor, 25, and Renard, 20. RICKEY CLOPTON Assistant Football Coach A native of Wesson, Rickey Clopton has over 20 years of coaching experience with stintsatOceanSprings,Terry, andWesson. He served asaheadcoachfor18 ofthe 19years with 14 atWessonHighSchool. RickeywasprincipalatWessonAttendanceCenterforfive years and is serving his third year as an assistant coach at Copiah-Lincoln Community College. Clopton holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Delta State University and a Master of Education degree fromJackson State University. Clopton is married to the former Mary Pettigrew. They have two children, Tommy, and Michelle. DAVID SMITH Women's Softball Coach This isDavid Smith's sixth season ashead softballcoachwithalife-timerecord of 132 wins and59 losses. The LadyWolveshaveneverfailed toqualifyforthe state tournament since Smith became coach. Teams won the state championships in 1993 and 1996, while being runner-up inRegion23 tournaments in 1993, 1995 and 1996. Smith wasvoted coach of the year in 1994 and 1996. ALoyd Starnative, David graduated fromCo-Lin,USMandJSU. He currently serves as directorofstudentlife atCo-Lin. He is thehusband ofRamonaHigdonSmithand they have two children,Justin, 13, and Lauren, 11. Coaching Staff DENNIS SIMS Men's Basketball Coach DennisSimsis inhisthirdyearas men'sbasketballcoachfortheWolves. His 1997-98Wolvesposted a 13-12record. Simswas named "CoachoftheYear" by the MACJC and the MAC in 1989 and 1997. A native of West Memphis, Arkansas, Sims' spent twelve years coaching at Southwest Mississippi Community College, winningthe South StateChampionship in 1989. Sims has alsocoached eleven years onthehighschoollevel,winningtwostatechampionshipsand fouroverallstatetitles. Heearned abach- elor ofscience degree in Physical Education from the UniversityofMississippi, and a master's degree in educationfromWilliamCareyCollege. Sims is married to the former Ginny Johnson of Yazoo City, and they have four children, Law, 22, Casey, 19, MaryKathryn, 10, and Mollie, 7. KEITH CASE Baseball Coach KeithCaseentershisseventhyearasheadcoachoftheCopiah-Lincolnbaseballteam.HecametoCo- Lin afternineyears ofsuccessful coach intheMississippi highschool ranks. The Wolfpack have participated in three NJCAA Regional Tournaments under Case in the last six years.The1998WolfpacksquadwontheRegion23D-IIchampionship.CasewasCoachoftheYearin 1998 fortheeffort oftheWolfpack. Fourteenyearsasaheadcoach,sixatCopiah-LincolnCommunityCollege,haveseenCoachCasewin over290games,win1 regionalchampionship,winsixdivisionalchampionships,namedcoachoftheyear six times, win one state championship,win two south state championships and named all-star coach for MPSA, MHSAAand NJCAARegion23 games. The latestwas this fallwhen he and his staffcoached the southintheNJCAARegion23 all-stargames. Case holds a B.S. degree from Mississippi State University and a M.Ed, degree from William Carey College. Additional studies have been completed at Mississippi College and the University ofSouthern Mississippi. AnativeofTryus,MS, and agraduateofMonticelloHighSchool,CaseismarriedtotheformerSusan Caffrey Theyhave one daughter, 7-year-old Macie. MIKE McINTYRE Tennis Coach A USPTR-certified tennis teaching professional with a career dual match record of 285 wins and 44 lossesover20seasonsatCo-Lin, MikeMclntyrehasbeennamedMACJC "CoachoftheYear" fivetimesand NJCAA Region 23 "Coachofthe Year" fourtimes, whilewatchinghis Wolveswinfivestateand fourregion- alteamchampionshipsandeightrunner-uptitlesatbothstateandregionallevels,plus17otherteamhon- ors. He has coached 64 individual state and regional champions and has had nine teams ranked in the NATIONAL TOP 25 . The undefeated (24-0) 1990 team was the first Mississippi team to ever finish in the "TOP 10" in the NJCAAnationals.Hewas a participant at theUSPTR International Symposium at Hilton Head Island in 1987 and from 1993-98 and has also attended the USTA National Tennis Teachers Conference held inconjunctionwiththe USOpenin NewYorkCityin 1997and 1998. Mclntyrealsoservesaschairofthebusinessdivision,teacheseconomics,andisanadvisortoCL'svery activePhi Beta Lambda chapter. As astudent at Copiah-Lincoln hewas selected to the MississippiJunior CollegeAll-StarfootballteamandwasamemberofaWolfpackstatechampionshiptrackteamwhileearn- ing his associate ofarts degree. He earned BS and MBAdegrees from the USM. He has done additional work at USM, Mississippi College, Memphis State University, University of Utah, University of South Carolina, University of Texas-Arlington, and Dennis Van der Meer's Tennis University at Hilton Head Island, SC. Mclntyre is married to the former Diane "Shorty" Payne (CL '67 and an elementary teacher in the BrookhavenPublicSchoolSystem), and theyhaveoneson, Michael,Jr., 18, a senioratWessonHigh. HANNA WALDHAM Soccer Coach Inher firstseason as head soccer coach forthe Wolves and Lady Wolves, Coach Hanna Waldhamof Brookhaven has previously coached under 19 and under 16 boys' teams for the past ten years. She also teachesbiology and anatomyat CrystalSprings HighSchool. Sheis themotherofthree, Raph,Christin, and Blaine. Coach Waldham is a graduate of Brookhaven High School and Washington State University. Regardingsoccershe "lovesthe game...hasapassionforthegame." Coaching Staff BRENDA SMITH Women's Tennis Coach BrendaSmithisenteringherthirdyearasthewomen'stenniscoach. Lastseason'simpres- sive showingwashighlightedbytheirtrip to theNJCAANationalTournamentinTucson,AZ andafinalrankingof16thinthenation.TheLadyWolvesfinishedwithadualmatchrecordof 14-2, finishing 2nd in the state tournament. Two singles playersearned national rankings and onewasnamedAcademicAll-American. Threekeyplayersreturnfromthis outstandingteam combinedwithfourtalentedfreshmen, theLadyWolvesseektoreturntoNationals. SmithalsoservesasaninstructorandthechairpersonfortheHPRdivision.Sheearnedher associate of art degree from Cloud County Community College (Concordia, KS) as well as a bachelorofscienceandmasterofeducationdegreesfromMississippiCollege.Beforejoiningthe Co-Lincoachingstaff, shewasthetenniscoachatWingfieldH.S. (Jackson,MS)forthreeyears. Her teams won two city championships and she coached a two-time boys singles State Champion. CoachSmithisaUSPTRcertified tennisprofessional. Sheismarried toSteveSmithofWessonandistheproudmotheroftwosons,Matt,5, and Josh,4. RONNY ROSS Golf Coach Servinghisthirdtermatthe Co-Lincampus,RonnyRosstookthereignsasthegolfcoach andheadgolfprofessionalforCo-Lin'sbeautifulWolfHollowGolfClub.BeforejoiningtheCo- Lin staff, Ross worked as assistant golf professional at Oak Harbor Golf Club in Slidell, La. While there, he earnedhis ClassAPGAstatus and also served as assistantgolfcoach to Pope JohnPaulHighSchool. He earned a marketing and professional golfmanagement degree from Mississippi State Universityin 1992. His 1998golfteamwonthestatechampionship. Heismarriedtoa formerCo-Lincheerleader,ElizabethMarquettRoss,andtheyhaveone son,JacobWariner. JOHNNYWILLIAMS Assistant Women's Softball Coach Afull-timefacultymemberfortenyears,JohnnyWilliamswillbeservinghissixthyearas anassistantcoachfortheLadyWolvessoftballteam. Healsoservesas teamstatisticianforthe softball,men'sand women'sbasketball,and thebaseballteams. Beforecoming toCo-Lin, Williams servedas anassistantcoachinbasketballandfootball atCrescentCityBaptistHighSchoolinMetairie,Louisiana.Healsoservedasanassistantfoot- ballandbaseballcoachatBogueChittoHighSchoolinthe1970s. HeismarriedtotheformerCindyHodgesofBogueChitto,andtheyhavetwosons,Ryan andWade. SHANNON CLAY COOLEY Assistant Baseball Coach CoachCooley isbeginninghis firstyearwith theCopiah-Lincolnbaseballteam. Shannon comestoCo-Linafterthreeyearsofplayingprofessionalbaseball. CoachCooleyisagraduateofEastCentralCommunityCollege,wherehewasastandout outfielderfortheWarriorsfor2seasons. FollowingECCC,Shannonwasastandoutperformer atNortheastLouisianaUniversity.AtNLUShannonwasvotedAll-RegionintheNCAASouth RegionandwasSouthlandConferencePlayeroftheYearhisseniorseason.CoachCooleywas draftedbythePhiladelphiaPhilliesinthe1996draftandplayedwiththatorganizationforthree years. Shannon graduated from Newton County High School. Cooley has anAssociate ofArts degreefromEastCentralCommunityCollegeandaBachelorofSciencedegreefromNortheast LouisianaUniversity.
