Coaching Staff GWYN YOUNG Athletic Director Women's Basketball Serving the college as athletic director since 1989, Gwyn Young has been head coach of the Lady Wolves basketball team for 20 years. Since comingto Co-Lin, he has seen histeamwintitle aftertitle and hascompiled H a recordof407wins and 144lossesto rankhiminthetopwinningest NJCAA coaches in the nation. The Lady Wolves accomplishments during Coach Young's stay have been numerous: 12 regular season 1st place finishes, 6 South Division Championships, 10 State Tournament Appearances, 16 Region XXIII Appearances, State Champions 1993, Runner-up State Champions 1983 and 1984, Runner-up Region XXIII Championship in 1990 and 1996, Region XXIII Champions 1989and 1993, NationalTournamentappearances in 1989 and 1993. Coach Young's team finished 4th in the National Tournament in 1989 and has been Nationally Ranked consistently during the years. Young was named Region XXIII Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1993. Coach of the Year honors were also received by Coach Young from the MACJC and the MAC in 1993. Young has also been named a Clarion- LedgerCoach of the Year for Junior Colleges on numerous occasions. Youngalso servesasamathematicsinstructor. HeholdsanassociateofartsdegreefromCo-Lin, abachelor'sdegree from Mississippi College, and master's degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. Young is married to the former Velesta Smith, and they have two children, Lane, age 20, and Jessica, age 17. BROOME PHILLIP Head Football Coach Phillip Broome is in his second year as head football coach for the Wolves. His 1995 Wolves posted an 8-2 record earning him and his coaching staff "Coach of the Year" honors. Broome and his staff were also selected to coach the 1995 south community college all-stars, winning 23-7 over the north squad. Broome served as defensive coordinator for five years prior to being named head football coach in 1995. He was a member of the coaching staff in 1989 and 1990 when the Wolves were South State Champs. Broome is also employed as a science instructor, receiving the NISOD award for excellence in teaching in 1994. He earned his bachelorof science and masterof science degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi. He is married to the former Cynthia Batson, and they have two sons, Tyler, 9, and Caleb, 4. DAVID CROSS Assistant Football Coach In his third year as an assistant for the Wolves, David Cross serves as defensive coordinatoranddefensive linecoach. From 1991 to 1993 he served as head footballcoach and athletic director at Greensboro High School in Greensboro, Alabama. While there the team posted a 22-8 mark and advanced to the state playoffs in all three years. Cross also spent three years as defensive coordinatorat Marion Institute and two years at Mississippi State with Coach Rocky Felker. He earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education and later received his master of education degree, all from Mississippi State University. Additional studies were completed at Blinn College and Livingston University. " A Starkville native, Cross is married to the former Sherrry Tanksley of Louisville. They have two children, Kristen Nicole, 8, and James Kyle, 3. Kg Coaching Staff CALVIN M. GREEN Assistant Football Coach Calvin M. Green joined the coach staff at Co-Lin in January 1994. Green graduated from Monticello High School and attended Copiah-Lincoln Junior College after high school. He graduated from Alcorn State University. He served as assistant defensive backcoachat East Mississippi Community College at Scooba fortwo years from 1992 and 1993 underthe former Mississippi State All American and National Football Leage standout Tom Goode. Green also did his practice coaching at Lawrence County High School. At Monticello High School he was a three-year letterman defensive back. At Co-Lin he was a memberof Coach Ray Ishee's state championship and East Bowlchampionsteamin 1985. In 1986, he received honors as most valuable defensive back, All State, All Region XXIII andwas chosen forthe All Starteam. At Alcorn State he was a letterman in 1987 and a memberof the nation's best secondary in 1988. He is married to the former Falana Armstrong. CHARLES SUTTON Assistant Football Coach For 13 years, wide receiver coach Charles Sutton has been providing leadership as a memberofthe Wolves coaching staff. While associatedwith the Wolfpack, he has seenthe Wolvescapturethestatetitlein 1985,andhasseentheteamcapturethesouthdivisioncrown in 1986, 1989, and 1990. Suttonservedasassistanttrackcoachin 1987,whentheteamwonthestatetitle. Healso currentlyservesascounselorforthecollege'sUpwardBoundprogram,apositionhehasheld for 14 years. Beforejoiningthe Co-Lin staff, Suttonworked as a classroomteacher and counselor in theLawrenceCountySchoolSystem. Heearned hisbachelorofsciencedegreefromAlcorn State University, and he has a Masterof Education from Jackson State University. Sutton and his wife, Evelyn, have two sons, Victor, 23, and Renard, 18. GLENN DAVIS Assistant Football Coach In his second yearasoffensive coordinatorofthe Wolves, Glenn Davis has 14 yearsof coachingexperience. He hadbeentheoffensive coordinatorat HolmesCommunityCollege forthree years. He also coached atthe Universityof North Alabamaforfourand a halfyears where hecoached receiversanddefensive backs, Mississippi State Universityfortwoyears and South Natchez High School forfour years. Davis holds a bachelorof science in educationdegreefrom Delta State anda masterof II education degree from Mississippi State University. Davis is marriedtotheformer Minta Earle. They havetwochildren, ason, Micah, 7, and a daughter, Ann Shelby, 4. DAVID SMITH Women's Softball Coach The 1996 season was David Smith's fourth year as head coach of the Lady Wolves sotfball team. Under his direction the 96 team won the state championship and they finished the season as a runner-up in the Region 23 tournament, and 7th nationally. He was named "Coach of the Year" for Softball. A Loyd Star native, David graduated from Co-Lin in 1980 and from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1982. He later received his masters in education administration from Jackson State University. He and his wife, the former Ramona Higdon, have two children, Justin, 11, and Lauren, 9. DENNIS SIMS Men's Basketball Coach A native of West Memphis, Arkansas, Dennis Sims has spent the last twelve years coaching at Southwest Mississippi Community College, the first four years as women's basketball coach and the last eight as men's coach. In 1989, Coach Sims' men's program finished with a 23-7 record winning the South State Chamnpionship and runner-up State Champions. Sims' overall Juco record at Southwest consisted of 203 wins, 114 losses. Coach Sims has also coached 1 1 years at Yalobusha, Columbia, and Jackson Prep where he won two state championships and four over all state championships. Simswas named MACJC andthe MAC Coachof the Year in 1989. Sims also serves as a physical education instructor. He earned a bachelor of science degree in Physical Educationfromthe Universityof Mississippi, andamastersdegree ineducationfromWilliam Carey College. Sims is marriedtotheformerGinnyJohnsonof Yazoo City, andthey havefourchildren, Law, 20, Casey, 17, Mary Kathryn, 8, and Mollie, 5. KEITH CASE Baseball Coach In hisfifth season as headcoachofthe Wolfpack baseballteam, Keith Case hasturned theCo-Linbaseballprogramintooneofthemostcompetitive inthestate.TheWolfpackhave set school recordstwice fora numberof wins in a season in the last fouryears under Case. Case also teaches in the mathematics department at Co-Lin. He earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education and a minor in mathematics from Mississippi State University in 1983. He received his master of education degree with emphasis in physical education from William Carey College in 1989. In 1991, he received his masterof education withemphasisinmathematicsfromWilliamCareyCollege. Hehasdoneadditionalworkfrom Mississippi College and the University of Southern Mississippi. DuringthetimesinceCasebecameheadbaseballcoachtherehavebeenmanychanges in the physical plant of the baseball program. Sullivan Field has become a "Sparkling Diamond"withthe additionof newstadiumgrandstands, modern pressbox and media area, sound system, restrooms and concessions. An up to date net backstop has added to the viewing pleasure for all baseball fans that attend Sullivan Field. A native of Tryus, Case graduated from Monticello High School in 1979. He is married to the former Susan Caffey of Jackson, and they have one daughter, Macie Marie Case, 5. MIKE MclNTYLRE Tennis Coach A USPTR-certified tennis teaching professionalwith a careerdual match record of 260 wins and 40 losses over 18 seasons at Co-Lin, Mike Mclntyre has been named MACJC "Coach ofthe Year"\\\ie times and NJCAA Region23 "Coach ofthe Year"iourtimes, while watchinghisWolveswinfivestateandfourregionalteamchampionships,plus 17otherteam honors. He hascoached64 individual stateand regionalteamchampionships, plus 17other team honors. He hascoached 64 individual state and regional champions and has had eight teamsrankedinthe NATIONAL 7~OP25('86women, '87women, '88 men, '89men, '90 men, '91 men, '93 men, and '96 men). The undefeated (24-0) 1990 teamwas the first Mississippi team to everfinish in the "TOP 10"in the NJCAA nationals. Mclntyre also serves as chair of the business division, teaches economics, and is an advisorto CL'sveryactive Phi BetaLambdachapter. He earned his associateofartsdegree from Copiah-Lincoln, and his bachelor of science and master of bsuiness administration degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi. He has done additional work at USM, MississippiCollege, Memphis State University, Universityof Utah, UniversityofSouthCarolina, UniversityofTexas-Arlington, and Dennis Van der Meer's Tennis University at Hilton Head Island, SC. Mclntyre is married to the former Diane Payne, and they have one son, Michael, Jr., 16. Coaching Staff BOB RICKETTS Assistant Baseball Coach Bob Ricketts worked with the offensive line for five years, and he served as offensive coordinator from 1985 through 1988 for football. Ricketts saw the Wolves win the south division in 1986, 1989, and 1990, plus seeing the team capture the state, region, and East Bowl championships in 1985. In 1975, Rickettswas named NCAA Division II Southern Baseball CoachoftheYearas head coach at Southeastern Louisiana University. Ricketts was also SLU's offensive coordinator. He holds a bachelor of arts degree from SLU and a masterof science degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. Ricketts is married to the former Shrley Allen, and they have three children, Susan Trahan, Bobby Ricketts, Jr., and Jim Ricketts. Ricketts is a proud grandfather. RONNY ROSS Golf Coach A new arrivaltothe Co-Lin campus, Ronny Ross takesthe reigns asthe golfcoach and headgolfprofessionalforCo-Lin'sbeautifulWolfHollowGolfClub. BeforejoiningtheCo-Lin staff, RossworkedasassistantgolfprofessionalatOakHarborGolfClubinSlidell, La. While thereheearnedhisClassAPGAstatusandalsoservedasassistantgolfcoachto PopeJohn Paul High School. HeearnedamarketingandprofessionalgolfmanagementdegreefromMississippiState University in 1992. He married his high school sweetheart and former Co-Lin cheerleader Elizabeth Marquett Ross, and they have one son, Jacob Wariner. JOHNNY WILLIAMS Assistant Women's Softball Coach Afull-timefaculty memberfornineyears, JohnnyWilliamswillbe serving hisfourthyear as an assistantcoachforthe Lady Wolves softballteam. He also servesasteam statistician forthe softball, men's and women's basketball, and the baseball teams. BeforecomingtoCo-Lin,Williamsservedasanassistantcoachinbasketballandfootball at Crescent City Baptist High School in Metairie, Louisiana. He also served as an assistant football and baseball coach at Bogue Chitto High School in the 1970s. HeismarriedtotheformerCindyHodgesofBogueChitto,andtheyhavetwosons, Ryan and Wade. BRENDA SMITH Women's Tennis Coach Brenda Smith is entering herfirst season as the women's tennis coach. Before joining theCo-Linstaff, shecoachedWingfield's (Jackson, MS)tennisteamforthreeyears,winning two State singles titles and two City team championships. She also has seven years of basketball coaching experience on the college and high school levels. Smith also serves as a physical education instructor and is acting chairperson forthat division. She earned her associate of arts degree from Cloud County junior College (Concordia, KS) as well as a bachelor of science and master of education degrees from Mississippi College. She is married to Steve Smith of Wesson and isthe proud motherof two sons, Matt, 3, and Josh, 2. We're behind the Wolves!
