ÖZBEK A bstract: This paper presents 187 species in 46 genera based on material collected and observations made on Bombyliidae in Turkey from 1996 to 2004, faunistic and detailed distributional data are presented. Of which, 60 species and 7 genera (Cononedys, Ligyra, Mariobezzia, Oestranthrax, Plesiocera, Pterobates, and Veribubo) are new for the Turkish fauna. Additionally, new distribution areas are added to all of the species. Total species have been recorded occurring in Turkey compile 254 species in 47 genera. Where possible, the genitalia of the species where checked to confirm the determination of the specimens. K ey w ords: Diptera, Bombyliidae, fauna, biocontrol agent, distribution, Turkey. Introduction The Bombyliidae also known, as "Bee flies", are a large family of Diptera, with almost 4500 valid species described worldwide. They occur on all continents except Antarctica; however, their highest diversities occur in semi-arid and arid environments (HULL 1973). They are very diverse and remarkable insects in size, appearance and colour, many of them resembling wasps, bees and even mosquitoes. Many have the proboscis very long and slender. The adults are found on flowers, resting on the ground or hovering in open sunny places. Nearly all of them are nectar and pollen feeders and therefore a factor in the fertilisation chain of wild plants and annual flowers in arid and semiarid areas (HEARD et al. 1990). The immature stages of most Bombyliidae are unknown, they are being considered mainly as parasitic or predacious on immatures of other insects (e.g. Orthoptera, Neuroptera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, and Hymenoptera). Therefore, the Bombyliidae could, in the future result in being economically important as biological pest control agents. Some important studies have previously been conducted back in 1920s and 1930s by PARAMONOV (1925, 1926a, 1926b, 1928, 1929, 1931), ENGEL (1932-1937) and AUSTEN (1937) on taxonomy of various genera of Bombyliidae. Later, ZAITZEV (1960, 1961, 1966, 1969.1971, 1973, 1974a, 1974b, 1975, 1976a, 1976b, 1976c, 1976d, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999) had significant publications on Bombyliidae in various countries describing many new species. BECKER (1916) described several species from Turkey. FRANÇOIS (1966, 1967) made two valuable contributions on this group of insects. BOWDEN (1967a, 1967b) described new species of the genera Conophorus MEIGEN and Heterotropus LOEW from Turkey. Recently, EVENHUIS & GREATHEAD © Biologiezentrum Linz/Austria; download unter www.biologiezentrum.at 456 (1999) have prepared a "World Catalog of Bee Flies". We should note that above men- tioned scientists had described many species from Turkey. In Turkey, Bombyliidae have received much less attention from native scientists than many other insect groups. However, HASBENLI & AKTAŞ (1995) studied the species of the genus Conophorus MEIGEN occurring in Turkey. HASBENLI (1997) and HASBENLI et al., (1998) contributed to the genus Hemipenthes Loew and described a new species of Conophorus from Turkey. More recently, HASBENLI & EVENHUIS (2000) have prepared a "Checklist of the Bombyliidae of Turkey" with some new records. Present paper deals with the Bombyliid fauna of Turkey, especially the eastern and southern part of the country where the biological crossroad of Asia, Europe and Africa meet. In the Palaearctic region, many genera of Bombyliidae are found around the Mediterranean Sea (Images are predominantly heliophilic). Data on distribution of spe- cies were taken from EVENHUIS & GREATHEAD (1999). Results The result of the present study is the identification of 187 species in 46 genera. Of which, 60 species and 7 genera are new for the Turkish fauna.
