The cross is superimposed, obliterating Taurus of the Zodiac. Rheinisches Museum Mitteilungen des Deutschen Archüologischen Instituts, Rómische Abteilung Transactions of the American Philological Association Yale Classical Studies Zeitschrift fur Papyrologie und Epigraphik vii Preface On March 7-9, 1997, a conference was held at the University of Georgia, in Áthens, Georgia, on the subject of "Interdisciplinarity and the Classics." This conference, which was organized by the editors of this volume, honored John J. Peradotto's twenty years as editor-in-chief of the journal Arethusa from 1975 to 1995. Jack, as he is known to all in the classics profession, was and remains the Raymond Professor of Classics at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Through his service as editor of Arethusa, and by his publications and his presence as a leading figure in the transformation of the classics as a discipline and a profession in the past three decades, Jack has also been a beloved colleague to a great many scholars, including those who have contributed to this volume and the many who attended the Georgia conference. The conference, conceived as a tribute to Jack Peradotto, was at the same time an expression of gratitude on the part of all of us for the jour- nal Arethusa itself, and its contributions to innovations in both the theory and the practice of classical philology. Jack himself, in his closing remarks at the conference, which are partially reproduced in the After- word to this volume, sought to deflect some of the spotlight away from himself and on to the contributors to the journal, many of whom were present in the audience. The chapters that follow represent a selection from the paper ses- sions and workshops in the conference on "Interdisciplinarity." The con- ference itself, in the spirit of Jack's continual concern for new methods in teaching and research in the classics, ended with an open discussion on the future of the profession. We cannot reproduce the spirit of coopera- tion and spontaneous exchange that prevailed at this session, and throughout the conference. But we can share with a wider public some of the thoughts, problems, and conclusions that several speakers presented, and which occasioned a lively response both then and afterwards. ix
