Description:This collection of essays by leading jewish scholars in America is an attempt to delineate the main currents of Reform judaism today, and to revive creative theological thinking in judaism. The common hope that motivates all the contributors is that their deep convictions and reasoned conclusions on the ultimate concerns of judaism-God, Torah, and Israel will stimulate further reflection and discussion and deepen the commitment of jews everywhere to their religious heritage. There is, of course, no single authoritative statement of American Reform judaism, or even of the American Reform rabbinate. Although all of the contributors to this book are alumni of the Hebrew Union College jewish Institute of Religion, and members of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, they confront judaism’s issues and problems on their own terms.
