Preface We are very pleased to welcome you to the 2010 Construction Research Congress sponsored by the Construction Institute (CI) of the American Society of the Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the University of Alberta, in collaboration with the University of Calgary and the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering. The 2010 Construction Research Congress is being held at the Fairmont Banff Springs in Banff, Alberta, Canada - one of Canada’s premiere hotels in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. The theme of the Congress is “Innovation for Reshaping Construction Practice”. The Congress aims to provide academics and industry professionals a forum to present and discuss revolutionary research findings, technological advances, emergent trends, and functional characteristics that are shaping the future of the architecture- engineering-construction industry. The purpose of the Construction Research Council is also to advance engineering knowledge and practice related to construction through stimulating and guiding research and assisting the financing thereof; to interpret and promote the utilization of the findings of research for the construction industry; and to identify future needs in the construction field and publicize them to stimulate appropriate research. The two-volume Proceedings contain 156 peer reviewed papers covering the following 15 general state-of-knowledge research areas in construction engineering and management. There were 259 abstracts initially submitted that were reduced to 169 accepted draft papers following a peer review. From this, a final 156 papers were accepted for publication and presentation based on the same peer review process used in selecting abstracts. • Automated/Real-Time Systems • Construction Modeling and Simulation • Disaster Planning and Mitigation • Information Technology and Computer Applications • Infrastructure Management and Underground Construction • Knowledge Management • Productivity, Benchmarking and Workforce Issues • Organizational Leadership and Management • Procurement, Contracting and Legal Affairs • Project Planning and Control • Project Risk Assessment and Management • Quantitative Methods and Models • Sustainable Construction and Facilities • Construction Education • CII Research iii We are delighted to see that this event is truly global with representation from 14 countries including Australia, Canada, China, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States. We believe that you enjoy these Proceedings and have a memorable experience of both the Congress and spectacular Banff.
