We are recognized, evaluated, and scrutinized by the signs on our faces and the expressions that we make. There are simply so many clues about personality and health that can be seen from the face, particularly if you know how to read the lines caused by previous expressions and assess the colors and markings that cor- respond to organ function. Faces clearly mirror what is going on inside the body and the mind, emotionally, psychologically, and physically. As a professional Face Reader, coming from the ancient tradition of physiog- nomy in Classical Chinese Medicine, it is heartening to see my teachings applied by Mary Elizabeth Wakeield in a holistic way. While there are many Acupuncturists successfully treating patients cosmetically, a constitutional acupuncture treatment is more profound and the rejuvenating results are longer-lasting when the constitution is supported and enhanced. She also recognizes and treats the deeper issues underlying the aging face and compas- sionately guides her patients through the individual transformations that result in changes to their faces. She is now gifting her students with the wisdom of her methods in this book, which is rich with pointers, tips, and advice on how to treat and what to expect, along with detailed treatment protocols. The modern focus on the face tends to emphasize ideals of perfection – celebri- ties are judged to have the best features, and magazines and the cosmetic industry create a dread and fear of any signs of aging on the face. This has led to a huge beauty industry that persuades millions of people to change their faces with plastic surgery, injectable illers, laser resurfacing, and botox. However, these treatments create the illusion of beauty, when real beauty resides in the emanation of the individual spirit, which the ancient Chinese called Shen. The face and the eyes show this spirit through a glow, and removal of the emotional blockages that lodge in the body allows the Shen to manifest. ix F Mary Elizabeth Wakeield’s method allows the patient’s Shen to show, which o r is more important than focusing solely on the speciic signs of aging, such as e w wrinkles. Wrinkles can certainly be lessened with facial acupuncture, but o r these lines will come back when the patient keeps on using the same expres- d sions until the cycle is altered. Helping patients to understand why they have the lines is critical to the process and I am delighted that Mary Elizabeth’s method encompasses this aspect of treatment. As the Baby Boomer generation now enters its ifties and sixties, there will be ever larger numbers of aging adults seeking to look younger, stay healthier and maintain their attractiveness. Therefore, this will be a growing ield and it is the perfect time for Acupuncturists around the world to learn and apply the techniques in Constitutional Facial Acupuncture in their clinical practices. Lillian Bridges x Acknowledgements “A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it to you when you forget the words.” —Unknown I had no idea what a massive undertaking this book would be, or how long it would take me to complete it! I have been writing this book all over the world, in between my international teaching engagements – from Sydney to London, Zurich, Amsterdam, New York, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and Vancouver. There are many friends, colleagues and loved ones that I would like to thank for all of their support, love, knowledge, and generosity, and for their willing- ness to offer assistance in whatever way they could. I would not have been able to accomplish this task without the support and expert help from my husband, Michael, who is both a dear friend and collabo- rator in my seminars, a teacher in his own right, an author, composer, and an exquisite opera singer! He is my precious companion, love and colleague, who knows and under- stands the song in my heart. When I have forgotten the words and the melody, been discouraged, doubted myself, or couldn’t remember the tune out of sheer exhaustion, due to the accumulated demands of traveling, teaching and writing, he has been there, quite literally, to sing it to me. He has read, re-typed all my chapters, pre-edited and formatted the text and the photos and e-mailed the inal product to Elsevier. I dedicate this book to you, Michael … I am deeply grateful, and feel simultaneously blessed and joyful to have you in my life, both professionally and personally. I would also like to thank Janneke Vermeulen, acupuncturist, gifted photog- rapher and friend, for the wonderful facial acupuncture photographs. We shot xi A them in Holland under less than ideal circumstances; Janneke, being a perfec- c k tionist, with a inely tuned eye, took some gorgeous, clear pictures, which n o beautifully illustrate the facial needling and the other tools used in the treat- w le ment protocols. d g Many thanks to my gorgeous model and friend, Ineke van der Ham, Lic. e m Acup., from Amsterdam, who, with her high cheekbones and gift of natural e n beauty, made an exquisite model. I am grateful to both of my Dutch colleagues t s for their humor, patience and willingness to spend the long hours necessary to produce these wonderful photographs for my book. Neale Albert also deserves thanks for my professional photograph and the excellent photo of the Diamond Acupuncture Facial™ I created for the Academy Awards that grace the book’s cover. Thank you, Deborah Malone, such a beautiful model, for your willingness to take time out from your busy schedule to have these photos taken. It would not have been possible to use these particular photographs without the assis- tance of Michael Taylor, a ine photojournalist from Australia, who kindly converted them into the CMYK format necessary for inclusion in the book. Tanya Sydney of Illumine Arts deserves a ‘Brava’ for her beautiful original print of Kuan Yin, which appears in Chapter 1. My Content Strategist, Claire Wilson, deserves special praise and my gratitude for her patience with me in negotiating my contract, for immediately answer- ing my every question, and for her willingness to mentor me with kindness, reassurance, compassion, clarity and humor. Without you, Claire, I might not have written his book. You are a light and a blessing. I also wish to acknowledge my Content Development Specialist, Catherine Jackson, who always kept me on track, gently nudged and reminded me to submit all the requisite documents and permissions, as well as the other mate- rials necessary to the publication process. Many thanks to Julie Taylor, my Project Manager, for her positive support during the editing, prooing and printing process, and for placing my manuscript with a wonderful and knowl- edgeable Copyeditor, Marcela Holmes. I would like to thank the Elsevier staff who worked on this project for the time and energy that has been contributed to the creation of this book. Two wonderful colleagues actually encouraged me in the very beginning, when I irst conceived the idea of writing a book on my system of facial acupuncture: Many thanks to my friend and colleague, Lillian Bridges, author of Face Reading in Chinese Medicine, who facilitated my connection to the proper chan- nels at Elsevier, and has always championed and supported me. Thank you, xii Lillian, for your generosity of spirit. Grazie mille to Giovannia Maciocia for answering my questions, and kindly A c advising me about the challenges of authoring my irst book. It was greatly kn o helpful, Giovanni, and I thank you for sharing your expertise. w le d Praise and thank yous are very important for my knowledgeable colleagues g e who looked over various chapters, provided feedback, corrected mistakes and m e made suggestions regarding edits. n ts I would irst like to acknowledge and thank my fellow acupuncturist and journalist, Abba Anderson, M.S.O.M., L.Ac., who edited the Introduction, Chapter 1, Chapter 3 and the Constitutional Facial Acupuncture protocols in Chapter 7. Thank you for providing practical insights, advice and excellent suggestions for organizing the material. Special thanks are due to my friend, Anne Harris, L.Ac., M.S.T.C.M., who, many years ago, arranged my very irst seminar in northern California, for her detailed, knowledgeable and grounded advice, and special eye to organiz- ing information in a precise and clear format. Much appreciation to another colleague, Alexis Bennett, L.Ac., M.S., for her creative vision, sense of symmetry, and her understanding of the nature of beauty in words. Many thanks to Virginia Bell, author and friend, who provided valuable assis- tance with the initial, more conceptual chapters, and emphasized clarity and communication with the general public, as well as acupuncturists. I would like to acknowledge Carolyn Bengston, D.A.O.M., L.Ac., who taught me my irst intradermal facial protocol at Tri-State Colleage of Acupuncture in New York City, and my colleague, Peggy McMeekin, D.A.O.M., L.Ac., my personal acupuncturist, who ensured that I could escape from the ‘human chair’ position my body had acquired through sitting and writing for many hours at a time. Also thanks to Peggy for conirming that I have correctly remembered certain protocols in Chapter 4. Many thanks are owing to Matt Callison, M.S., L.Ac., author and colleague, for encouraging me to set a standard for facial acupuncture, to raise the bar of excellence in this ield, and to write a deinitive book on this topic. Well, Matt, here it is. I also created a 2-year International GOLD STANDARD FACIAL ACUPUNCTURE® Certiication Program, premiering it at North- western Health Sciences University (NWHSU) in Bloomington, Minnesota. I would also like to thank NWHSU for their fantastic facilities and willingness to take a chance on this program. In particular, many ‘bravas’ to Diana Berg, Director, and Jenny Bell, Conference/Marketing Coordinator, and the rest of the Continuing Education Department, for their conidence in me, and their capacity to move heaven and earth to make the GOLD STANDARD a reality. I especially wish to thank the students and colleagues who have committed themselves to this GOLD STANDARD FACIAL ACUPUNCTURE® Program. xiii A They have arranged their schedules in order to attend, journeyed to Minnesota c k from all parts of the globe, and further inspired me with their excitement and n o enthusiasm for this burgeoning ield in Chinese medicine. Thank you for your w le courage and willingness to undergo this transformational process. d g I wish to thank Lin Sister Herb Shop in Chinatown, New York – in particular, e m the late Susan Lin, Master Herbalist, and beautiful friend, who advised me on e my Muse L’ Herbal topical herbal formulations. Her brother, Frank, my present n t s herbalist, keeps me healthy, generously shares his herbal expertise, and reminds me to be mindful about preserving my vital energies. Thank you for your caring, Frank. I am so appreciative of my Lin Sister extended Chinese family, every one of you. I would be remiss if I did not thank all my students worldwide, who have faith in me, and the courage to approach facial acupuncture at a more pro- found level. I continually learn from all of you, and respect your individual wisdom and abilities. I am always happy to see that you are abundant, lour- ishing and performing Constitutional Facial Acupuncture with skill and a sense of accomplishment. I have created all these facial acupuncture protocols for my patients, and am honored that they have chosen me to be their practitioner, trusting me to help them. I appreciate your loyalty. A big thanks to all of the universities, colleges, herbal companies, schools, centers and businesses, conferences and symposiums, which have allowed me to reach out to a wide range of people and practitioners through my teaching. I enjoy collaborating with you, and appreciate your professional support. I am blessed with a family that has always encouraged my communication skills and creative endeavors. They are writers, artists, musicians, professors, teachers and other professionals, who also have a practical business sense. I am grateful to my late mother, the gorgeous Kathryn Wakeield Bovard, who was a ine writer, artist and a passionate English teacher. Thank you for cor- recting my grammar and spelling on a regular basis, reading my stories and poems, and encouraging me to write. Much love and appreciation is due to my late father, Ray B. Wakeield, who was a scientist, musician and teacher. Thank you for supporting my artistic side, and ensuring that I received both voice and lute lessons during my childhood. I still miss your joie de vivre, melodious laughter and passion for life. Here’s to my brother, Ray, a professor of medieval German with unique, innovative communication and teaching skills. Thank you for encouraging me to discover new ways to inspire my students. I am grateful to my beautiful sister, Barbara, another teacher, who is funny and brave, and who has always encouraged and supported me uncondition- xiv ally, both in the writing of this book and my other creative ventures.
