AcAdemic Consortium 21 [ ] AC21 Sixth International Forum 2012 Maximising the Benefits of Internationalisation Celebrating Academic Consortium 21 [AC21] 10th Anniversary Forum Conference Program and Abstract Book Maximising the Benefits of Internationalisation Professor James A. McWha AO Vice-Chancellor and President, The University of Adelaide Biography Professor James McWha has been Vice-Chancellor of the University of Adelaide since 2002. He came to Adelaide following a highly successful term as Vice-Chancellor and President of Massey University in New Zealand from 1996-2002. He has overseen a dramatic increase in the University of Adelaide’s size and impact. Student numbers have doubled, the University has internationalised, and a $400 million capital plan is nearing completion. New programs have been introduced in direct response to Government priorities and public need, and the University has won public funding for world-leading research infrastructure in Plant Functional Genomics; Plant Phenomics, and Photonics and Advanced Sensing. Professor McWha has contributed solidly to the higher education sector on a national and international level, to the great reputational enhancement of higher education in Australia. He was appointed an honorary Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in December 2011. He will retire in June 2012. Vice Chancellor’s Welcome On behalf of the University of Adelaide, I offer our warmest welcome to members of the Academic Consortium for the 21st Century (AC21) to Adelaide for the 10th Anniversary celebrations. It is a great honour for the University of Adelaide to host this special occasion and we are delighted to introduce our beautiful North Terrace Campus and the City of Adelaide and surrounds to the visiting delegates. Over the past decade, AC21 has provided an important and much- needed platform to foster collaboration through education, research, industry and community endeavour. The AC21 demonstrates the tremendous opportunities and influence we share as an international network - reinforcing the whole is truly greater than the sum of the parts. And, as we gather to explore the grand challenges facing our world, this spirit of partnership and commitment to serving our global community further strengthens our vision and our alliance. I wish all AC21 representatives an inspiring International Forum and a wonderful 10th anniversary celebration. Professor James A. A Message from Director of AC21 General Secretariat AC21’s 10th Anniversary It is my great pleasure to celebrate with you the AC21’s 10th Anniversary. AC21 was established on June 24, 2002 at the International Forum hosted by Nagoya University, Japan as an international network comprised of educational, research and industrial organisations throughout the world. The forum brought together the presidents and high-ranking delegates from 25 of the world’s leading education and research institutions, and resulted in the founding of a new and vigorous global partnership in higher education, called Academic Consortium for the 21st Century or simply, AC21. As of May 1, 2012, AC21 has a total membership of 20 universities in 10 countries. Over the past 10 years, AC21 accomplished significant achievements in promoting collaboration in education, research, and partnerships with industry and local communities, the three pillars of AC21’s activities. One of the major activities is the International Forum held biennially, which brings together scholars from around the world, having deliberated on themes such as international collaboration, and the role of universities in globalisation and in the 21st century. Another is the Student World Forum, held alternately with the International Forum, which gathers AC21 member students together to confer on pressing world issues, such as global sustainability. AC21 also offers financial support for research networking among AC21 members with its Special Project Fund, designed to facilitate collaborative academic exchange between leading scholars of member universities. These activities have been highly successful in fostering a strong sense of unity and accomplishment within the AC21 community. We shall continue to develop, and to serve our membership with offerings that no other university alliance can provide. I look forward to continuous prosperity and success of our unique consortium for the future. Last but not least, on behalf of the AC21 membership, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the University of Adelaide for hosting a program of exciting and invigorating events, which shall indeed constitute a special International Forum to mark our 10th anniversary!
