Theywereyoung (Barrow about43, Greenwood about 33, and Penryabout30), highly educated (all three attended Cambridge University, andPenryalsograduatedfromOxford), and devout followers ofJesus Christ. They believed that salvation came solely by grace through faith, that the Scriptures were the sole authority for faith and practice, and that each church was to consist of believers directlyruled by KingJesus. Seekingto be faithful to Christ, these men and others in England who shared their beliefs, formed churches outside of the established state church. Obedience to Christ was their motivation, but the state viewed these "Separatists" as seditious agitators who had to be eliminated. The authorities hoped that killing these three prominent leaders would cause those who remained to see the error of theirways, and abandon their beliefs and practices. Their hopes were dashed. In spite ofcontinued persecution, these early Congregationalists (the name they would eventually receive) would not surrendertheirbeliefs. Whetherthe price was death, imprisonment, harassment, orexile, beingtruetothe Lordwas aprice worth paying! Following in the footsteps ofthose who have gone before us, the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference, consisting ofchurches, ministers, commissionedworkers, laypreachers, and individual laymembers, seeksto remain faithful andtruetothe Lord, no matterwhatthe cost. Inthis pluralistic age, we are united inproclaimingthatChrist istheway, thetruth, andthe life (John 14:6), andthat salvation comes by grace through faith, the giftofGod, unattainable by ourefforts (Ephesians 2:8-9). We are united in ourbeliefthat the Bible istheonly inspired, inerrant, infallible, authoritativeWordofGod written (IITimothy 3:16-17). We seekto conform ourlives andourchurchesto its truth. We bring its truth to bear upon ourculture without compromise. We are united in our beliefthat Christ directlyrules overeach church, that each church is to be guided by the Scriptures and led by the Holy Spirit, and that each church is directly accountable to the Lord. Jesus is ourHigh Priest, and all thepeople ofGodarepartofHis royal priesthood(I Peter2:9). It is ourgreat joyto worship Him now and forevermore, to love and edify one anotheras members ofHis bodythe church, andto carry outthe Great Commission to bringthe GoodNewsto all, both nearand far. Wethankthe Lord forourConference. United in Christ, maythe Lord leadus andempowerusto faithfully serve Him inthetwenty-firstcentury! ToGodalonethe glory!
