Who were these men and why were they executed? They were young (Barrow about43, Greenwoodabout33y andPenry about 30), highly educated (all three at- tended Cambridge University, and Penry alsograduatedfrom Oxford), anddevout followers ofJesus Christ, They believed ^»»_. ^^ ^''^^ salvation came solely by grace lUi ^^^W'l !'ijHB ! throughfaith, thattheScriptureswerethe H ' '/^i lii^^H k sole authorityforfaith andpractice, and H ./,(,'' llj^^Hill, ^^^^^each church was to consistofbeliev- B V ' JjHH 'I ^^^directlyruledbyKingJesus. In spite ofcontinuedpersecution, these early Congregationalists (the name they would eventually receive) would not surrender their beliefs. Whether theprice was death, imprisonment, harassment, or exile, being true to the Lord was aprice worthpaying! Followingin thefootsteps ofthose who havegone before us, the Conservative CongregationalChristian Conference,consistingofchurches,ministers,com- missioned workers, laypreachers, andindividuallay members, seeks to re- mainfaithfulandtruetotheLord, nomatterwhatthecost. Inthispluralistic age, weareunitedinproclaimingthatChrististheway, thetruth, andthelife (John 14:6), andthatsalvationcomesbygracethroughfaith, thegiftofGod, unattainable by our efforts (Ephesians 2:8-9). We are united in our belief thattheBible is the only inspired, inerrant, infallible, authoritative Wordof God written (II Timothy 3:16-17). We seek to conform our lives and our churches to its truth. We bring its truth to bear upon our culture without compromise. Weare unitedin ourbeliefthat Christdirectly rules overeach church, thateachchurchistobeguidedbytheScripturesandledbytheHoly Spirit, andthateach church isdirectlyaccountabletotheLord. Jesusisour High Priest, and all thepeople ofGod arepart ofHis royalpriesthood (I Peter2:9). Itis ourgreatjoy to worshipHim now andforevermore, to love andedify one anotheras members ofHis bodythe church, andto carryout the Great Commission to bringthe GoodNews to all, both nearandfar.
