Schools services added a further 160,000 attendees. The total worshipping community of churches across the Church of England, the report says, was 1,142,000 people, of whom 20% were aged under 18, 50% were aged 18-69 and 30% were aged Ruth and Chris Reid 70 or over. Figures also show that 2.5 million attended a Church of England Church at Christmas in 2015 and Registered Childminding 1.3 million people attended a service at Easter. William Nye, Secretary General of the Archbishops’ Council, said: “The Church of England is set- ting out on a journey of Renewal & Reform, aiming to reverse our numerical decline in attendance 07875 070862 so that we become a growing church in every region and for every generation. “These figures represent a realistic assessment of where we start from in terms of weekly atten- dance. We are confident in a hopeful future where our love of God and service of neighbour will form the basis for future growth. “Statistics for Mission provides an invaluable foundation for this and demonstrates that the Church, fully aware of where we are yet confident of the future, still has a strong base to work from.” ——————————— Pytchley Golf Lodge Est 1995 • 9 Hole Pay and Play Golf Course • 24 Bay Floodlit Driving Range • Ironside Bar Serving Real Ales • Fresh Food Served Daily • “The Garden Room” available for private events • American Golf Superstore • Open 7 days a week Kettering Rd, Pytchley, Northants, NN14 1EY 01536 511527 www.pytchleygolflodgekettering.co.uk Continuing below is the beginning of an excellent article by Dave Hill of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Colorado, defining the words in common use within the church broken up under various headings: These are general terms used in the church that don't fall into the other categories. Lessons and Carols: The Festival of Lessons and Carols Maundy Thursday: Thursday in Holy Week (see BCP p. 274). The name is from Latin mandatum ("command"), referring to Christ's commandment concerning foot-washing. It is also the day on which the first Lord's Supper was celebrated. Palm Sunday: The Sunday of the Passion (BCP pp. 270-73), the Sunday before Easter. In the Episcopal Church, members of the congregation carry real palms during the service. In some churches, the tradition is that palms from one year are saved, dried and later burned to make the ashes used at the next year's Ash Wednesday service. Passover: A Jewish festival commemorating the escape of the Jews from Egypt. Pentecost: The conclusion of the Fifty Days of Easter and the commemoration of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. Formerly known in the Episcopal Church as Whitsunday. Also refers, as a season, to the Sundays and Weekdays following the Day of Pentecost and ending on the Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent. During this sea- son the Church especially emphasizes the Holy Spirit's empowerment of all Christians for ministry to each other and the communities and world in which they live. Whitsunday: The old name for Pentecost Sunday, the day described in Acts 2. As of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, the day became known as Pentecost.
