Professor Dr. Martin Arneth was Congress Secretary. As in previous years, the IOSOT Congress was surrounded by the congresses of the International Organization for Septuagint and Cognate Studies (IOSCS; August 1–3), the International Organization for Qumran Studies (IOQS; August 4–7), the International Organization for Masoretic Studies (IOMS; August 5–6), the International Organization for Targumic Studies (IOTS; August 7–9), and the International Syriac Language Project (ISLP; August 5–7). In addition, special panel sessions were organized on the ongoing editions of the Hebrew text, the literary history of the Old Testament, and the issue of aniconic veneration of Yhwh. The traditional eve- ning lecture on archeology and a reading of the recently edited letters of Julius Wellhausen rounded out a splendid program which was accompanied by short papers and self-organized workshops. In addition to the Presidential Address, the present volume includes the invited main papers delivered at the IOSOT Congress. As editor-in-chief of Supplements to Vetus Testamentum, I have pleasure in expressing my gratitude to the President of IOSOT, Professor Levin, the Congress Secretary, Professor Arneth, and the organizing committee for host- ing this intellectually and socially rewarding and enjoyable event in Munich, a city which has great collections of manuscripts and fine arts. I also wish to thank all the invited lecturers for their contributions, and Brill for their col- laboration in publishing the present volume. Special thanks are due to Lisa J. M. Sedlmayr for her skilled work in preparing the manuscript for publication. Christl M. Maier Abbreviations AASF.B Annales Academiae Scientiarum Fennicae.
