Prophecy and Eschatology ............... 199 AAGE BENTZEN IN MEMORIAM PROFESSOR AAG E BENTZEN When Professor AAGE BENTZEN was elected President of the newly founded "InternationalOrganization of Old Testament Scholars" three years ago in Leyden, he said that he regarded hls election as an acknowledgement of Danish research of the Old Testament, and he promised to do everythlng in his power to prove worthy of the honour. Everybody who knew him weIl, knows how much time and energy he expended on the arrangement of the Congress in Copenhagen at the end of August, and when hls sudden death oc curred on 4th June 1953 in the midst of these preparations it was felt by those who had to make the decision that they owed it to Professor BENTZEN'S memory to carry out the Congress as planned. At the time of hls death Professor BENTZEN was only 58 years old, but he had been teaching at the University for a great many years. Aft er taking part, in 1923, in a prec e ding competition, he was appointed lecturer in Old Testament exegesis at the University of Copenhagen, and in 1929 he became professor ordinarius. The re sult of the competition, for whlch the participants had only 2 months for preparation, was BENTZEN'S first published work: Den israelitiske Sabbats Oprindelse og Historie indtil JerusaletllS Erobring 70 e.K. BUHL and JACOBSEN, in their youth, had introduced the WELLHAUSEN theories into Denmark, and to the end BENTZEN continued to support their conception of the sources of the Pentateuch. Through JOH. PEDERSEN BENTZEN acquired an understanding of the religious-hlstorical school, the works of whlch were just beginning to be acknowledged at thls period. In thls way BENTZEN also became a close follower of S. MOWINCKEL who published the lst volume of hls Psalmenstudien in 1921 (a year aft er the publishlng of JOHANNES PEDERSEN's IsraelI-II). Before BENTZEN obtained an appointment in Copenhagen he had spent several months studying in Germany and England. In Germany he studied in 1921-22 under GUSTAV HÖLSCHER and under PAUL KAHLE in Giessen and here he came under an influence whlch
