Its success is evident from the number of participants. There were over 1500 active participants including almost 300 students. In addition there were exhibitors, relatives and friends, making a grand total of 1827 registered from 36 countries. The scientific success of the Congress was ensured by over 2300 contributions ranging from lectures, symposia talks, and workshop contributions, to poster presentations. The excellence of the conference center, the fair city of Toronto itself, the trips and social events all contributed to a memorable Congress. This volume is a record of the lectures given by the recipients of the International Association of Radiation Research Henry S. Kaplan Dis- tinguished Science, Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation Richards, and North American Hyperthermia Group J. Eugene Robinson Awards, the Congress Lectures and the talks given in the 35 symposia. Abstracts of the various talks and poster presentations appeared in Volume I of the Proceedings, which has been distributed to the participants. Unfortunately, the words of the speakers who made the workshops so successful are not included, nor are the telling and entertaining remarks made at the debate on the role of DNA double-strand breaks in radiation-induced cell killing. The Radiation Research Society Failla Memorial Lecture, given by E. J. Hall, will be published in Volume 129 of Radiation Research. The scientific sessions were stimulating and their content was broadened by speakers whose research is not in radiation but in fields with interests in common. The tone was set during the Opening Ceremony by a stimulating lecture on Creativity in Science delivered by Dr. David Perkins of Harvard University. Papers had to be restricted in length, which has tested the ingenuity of the authors and, in particular, the editors in their attempt not to allow brevity to impair clarity. The Award Lectures introduce the volume, and the other papers are grouped under ten headings, a scheme that does not do justice to the individuality of some of the contributions. XXI EDITORS' ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Editors would like to recognize the help that they have had from many people, especially all those who read the manuscripts submitted for this volume during the Congress. We would like to thank Oddvar F. Nygaard for his help. It is with great gratitude that we acknowledge the secretarial help we have had from Bernice Corn, Donna Langston, Nancy Ribble, Jennifer Thompson, and Faye Young. We are grateful to Prof. J. W. Osborne and Krista Voyce for the photographs that appear on pages xxv, xxvi, xxviii, 32, 312, 406, 532, 722, 862, 880, 1039, and 1040.
