Looking at actors that depart from established structural and behavioralpatternsprovidesopportunitiestoexaminehowthosedevia- tionshelpgeneratethenormsandidentitiesthatconstituteinternational society.SystematicexaminationoftheAssassins,Mongols,andBarbary powersprovideshistoricalcomparisonandcontexttoourcontemporary struggle,whileenrichinganddeepeningourunderstandingofthesys- temicforcesbehind,andsocietaleffectsof,theseconfoundingpowers.
